Was looking at a 1994 defender ute yesterday, with a mate of mine. Hoping to convert him from the dark side. The ute was very good nick. The only thing i'm not sure about is this: We went is to a dirt area and put it in low range and put the centre difflock in and drove around a bit to check for untoward noises. It was all good. Difflock light was on. We took the difflock out and drove on the dirt untill it the light went out then went out on the bitumen road. About 50m down the road we made a left turn. There an almight bang from underneath. If the difflock light had still been on I would have said that it had come unlocked under load. Or if it had a detroit locker that it had let go around the corner as they do.
We stopped looked around couldn't see any thing. So drove off all was fine, drive to all the wheels.
I can't think what it was likely to be.
Can't rule out some sort of detroit locker but it is unlikely considering how clean and straight the vehicle is and i can't believe the current owner wouldn't know.
Any ideas?

Cheers
Dan.

Sounds to me that the CDL had not disengaged when the light went out and the load bang was the result of wind up and the CDL suddenly disengaging

Sounds like the difflock might be sticking, disengaged enough to release the light, but the box was still locked. Might be worth confirming this by repeating and as soon as the ligt goes off test to see it's actually disengaging. Just jac one of the wheels up at the back - gearbox in neutral and then try turning the wheel - it should spin.

Sounds like the most likely explanation. Will have to investigate. Wasn't sure if that could happen on the Lt230 is all. I am used to the old Lt95.
