looking at buying a P38a

I am looking at a 97 P38a HSE. It has one worrying problem that I know nothing about, that is the ABS is not working. Is this common and what things should I look for, if so is it a rather expensive fix or are there plenty of after market parts.

well its hard to tell from just your post, do you no about eny fault codes, what warning lights are on the dash, it could be a easy fix, or it could get very expensive with them cars,

ABS faults aren't common on the P38 but the modulator has been known to fail (big bikkies). There's a guy up your way who makes a few internal replacement parts for one modulator problem.
Is there any brake assistance at all?

could also be the pump if there are brakes still, but not much. You should be able to hear the abs pump start and preasureise the system when you put the ignition on. They have a habit of burning out the motors i hear.

I am going over there today, he assures me that the vehicle stops just not very well:(

I have had a look at the vehicle, the ABS and Traction Control lights are on and the vehicle stops but does not feel like there is any or very little power assistance. Does that help anyone?

do you hear the pump starting up when you turn the ignition on? If no lift the bonnet and look just infront of the master cylinder and there is a pump with a round black bubble thing on the top (an accumulator). If you unplug this and short 12v across 2 of the wires (try all 3 as you wont damage anything if you are only testing for half a seccond) and see if the motor spins. If it spins you have a problem with a blown fuse (2c) bcm ($500) or somewhere else. If it is the pump then you are up for about $1200 for a new one or $500 for a 2nd hand one (pm me if you need any of this stuff).
