Just thought I would post a couple of pics of 30-146 1978 Census 6006b FFR.
He hasn't got a name yet but he has at least come home for the first time. :D

He drove without problem from Nowra to Sydney, didn't hold up the traffic at all but is over reading on the speedo by 10 klicks at each decade. So some sorting out to do and fitting of the missing accessories, but should be ready for Jan 26th. For his first official day out. :) :)

Could it be that the speedo has been replaced with a civvy unit?
Since the army ran 7.50's they also had to fit a re-calibrated speedo to compensate.

Green Land Rover ones ;)
Just some that I had lying around in the shed that came off an olive drab Land Rover that's also in there. I had them grit blasted and re-finished instead of the white stage one rims that came with the vehicle. They look the same as the ones I've seen on other military Land Rovers, like the pink panthers and a poster of the Perentie LRPV.
Why do you ask??

No they are actually OEM rims off 2 of my 1968 Series Land Rovers.
Looks in top condition. What are the circumstances by which you got hold of it?First saw the vehicle as a rolling chassis/firewall when I picked up a RRc that I'm wrecking for parts. The chassis and firewall had no rust, so when information reached me that the complete vehicle was for sale I jumped on it.

Very nice! It's good to see another S3 with the original plain galvanised bumper rather than painted over.
So what sort of speeds were you geting (realistically) with the 2.6? I'm curious as to what I should expect from grover when I get finished?

So what sort of speeds were you geting (realistically) with the 2.6? I'm curious as to what I should expect from grover when I get finished? Err Well actually, the 2.6 is still sitting on the workshop floor. :o
The current engine was the same as Grover was a month ago. So the information I can give you only relates to that engine. Didn't speed the entire journey but was doing 110KPH along Maddens plains on the F6 without temp rises etc.
I can say that when new in the 2.6 had to use 3rd gear up the hills at each end of the F6 when the Holden goes up in top (and the reason George Wildman used the Highway and not the F6 toll road going from Balgownie to Sydney although I always used the F6 in my 2.6) so expect less performance than your used to with the Holden.
But after all, as lots of people on this forum say, Holden engines are cr....

The holes seem to have fixed something on the outside of the vehicle. The mount on each side has the same hole configuration and is about 18" long by 4" high. The difference seems to be in the positioning of the brackets, on the RHS the forward lower bolt uses one of the holes for the antenna bracket, but straddles the antenna holes on the LHS.
Could this have been to mount cable reels on the side of the tub or something?
Any other ideas?

No I thought about that, but when you look at the creases on the RHS body, you can see that something has pushed in to make indentations. Had it been something mounted on the inside, the body would be pushed out.

Your insight was 100% as usual. Today I borrowed one of the F1 mounts in question and it was an exact match with the holes in question.

Antennae mounts in bottom two images.
Now I know that my vehicle had F1 radios at some time during it's life but only for the rear pair of antennae. So I'm thinking that it may have kept its 548 and 77 sets as well. You can see evidence of it having 4 tables for most of it's service life so must have had something like that.
What do others think? :TakeABow: :TakeABow:

Have been going through the vehicle sorting out all those things you need to do with a new acquisition. The new doortops now have some glass in them.
The windscreen has a seal at each side.
The front driveshaft has been refitted.
The Range Rover LHS drag link end has been replaced with the correct SIII type and now have some right lock. (In fact with the English rims I have been able to back off the stops and so have more lock than usual and still don't rub the springs on full lock.
Have re-sealed the drive plates and new "O" rings in the caps on both front wheels so should have stopped the oil leaks.
Today have replaced one swivel seal so should have stopped that leak also, in-fact I think a lot of the leak was oil bypassing the back of the seal. Now I can start fitting up the radio stuff, today I found out my RT-524 VRC has arrived in Windsor so will run out and pick it up! :) :burnrubber: :clap2: :clap2:
So everything is looking up for Aussie day. :) :) :) :)

I didn't take any piccys today, so I can only tell you what "didn't happen". :D :D
Picked up the RT-524/VRC with mount and antenna base from Windsor and popped around to Black Bill's place on the way because he has kindly made up some power cables for my 2 tables. Thanks Bill :) :) :)
Then fitted up three of the four antenna tune units (MX-6707/VRC) and 2 of the masts (which makes up the rest of the AS-1729/VRC) and even flew the flag to check if the masts would cope - this being their first time attached to an ex-Aussie Army Land Rover.
Fitted the backrest over the toolbox in place and the dicky seats and started preparing the radio tables for mounting. A little bit of olive drab on the power distribution box, unfortunately it has the wrong mounting bolts so have to source the correct ones.
The rear tyres are now facing the same way as the front ones. Some rubber mats made for the front footwells.
Tomorrow hopefully the tables will be complete with radio mounts in place, the fourth AS-1729/VRC (but missing the fourth mast ATM. Then off for a the annual Rego check on Monday.
Anyone know where the best place to buy deep cycling batteries in Sydney? And which ones for the battery boxes in the side of the vehicle?

Things are moving along.
Today the power distribution box has been fitted in situ. The set-up is to be a little unusual pro-tem till I sort out the Rover engine and a 24V alternator.
The plan is, the 2 (12" deep cycling batteries (75AH)) for the 24V system in the left hand battery box and leaving the RH box available for other things ATM. (Is there an EMEI to use a battery retainer as a toolbox retainer? :D :D :D) There will be a 3rd battery (N70ZZ or 75AH Deep Cycling) in there as well, this will be charged from a 12V dual battery isolator. The third battery will be running a Mil. Spec. 12V-24V inverter to charge the 24V system through the external Gen Set plug on the face of the power distribution box, plus be a 12V supply available for other uses. (The Battery Retainer/Special, Vehicle G 325-1-DLA-MkI, Diana for the use of, is at prototype stage awaiting final finish welding.)
The 12V-24V inverter is sitting in place with the cables ready for electrical certification and approval by Black Bill. Thanks again Bill.
Tomorrow, is to finish wiring up of the 3rd battery and finish the radio tables, painting etc.
Does anyone have an EMEI showing the actual connections for the batteries inside the power distribution (control Box)? I have the schematic but it is a little unclear what battery terminal goes where. (If not I'll leave it for BB.)
I'll try to take some pics on the morrow.

The FFR looks great.
I don't know what SIII jerry can holder straps look like but Perentie ones are available from LR. They may be similar?
The antennae balls and antennae hold down clips come as a set and are available from Fair Radios Sales in the US towars the bottom of this page; Fair Radio Sales Company, Inc. - Catalog (http://www.fairradio.com/catalog.php'mode=view&categoryid=188).
I was lucky and bought mine when the $AU was high against the $US so they weren't too dear. I've got 2 spare sets (2 balls and 2 clips) if you can't find them elsewhere.

Don't worry with a price of $US10 per kit the exchange rate is no drama, Last year I bought some 9.00 16 tyres from Pennsylvania the first 5 landed at just under $A300 each. I then went and purchased another 2 about 3 months later and they were $A457 each. In October I went to get another 2 and they were over $A500 each, those ones never came, at that price I'll put up with the Alliance Traction Lugs! :( :( :(

The step is 3 bits of angle welded together and fixed to the bottom of the rear cross member. I was thinking that it is original ex-army as it was on the vehicle when the P.O. bought it from Warwick Lord.

I had a look at Black Bill's Perentie prototype and they are different to the ones on my SIII. His go from the back to the aluminium tub over the can then down to the back side of the chassis bracket.
My SIII brackets seem to have a strap that goes from the front of the chassis bracket over the can back down to the back of the chassis bracket. and would therefore need to be about 20" longer.
So I don't know if the production Perenties have the same as BB's or mine. Does anyone know the answer?

Production Perenties have the same strap as that fitted to Black Bills Perentie so they are different to the Series 3 type... not that it helps answer your initial question...

May I be cheeky enough to suggest that perhaps the corps/unit sign, (Red/yellow RAAC one) should be on the drivers/off side whereas the other mysterious REMLR one would, in this case, be deemed the div sign and as a result carried on the passenger/near side.

P.S. Just to follow up, I may be anachronistic, however I feel if one is going to present a vehicle like this it is a small thing to do it correctly, while to do otherwise is an insult to the regiment it purports to represent and all those who have actually served.

Took the FFR out for a drive yesterday afternoon. 350 Km to see if the recent maintenance improved things at all.
Steering is much better and now not a task to drive, seat cushions could be improved as they are a bit too soft and lacking lumbar support. Brake pedal stays where it should be and wheels don't lock up since all the pads were adjusted.
Couldn't find 5th gear a few times.
All-in-all am happy with the drive, but have decided the vehicle is a one speed wonder, same speed in top gear whether it's up hill or down dale. The B doubles that would rush past us and nearly blow us off the side of the road then disappear around the next bend, would be caught up at the next decent hill. Need to fit an adjustable main jet before Corowa.

A mate AAVA had the F1/F3 sitting in his shed, but I'm still looking for the battery station to go with it and a few cables as well as the CY-2577 power supply for the range booster on the 77set. There is a member of the MLU forum who has threatened to build some but it hasn't happened yet. So am on the lookout for the socket on a dead 22 or 77 battery to make the adapter myself.
