I bought two of these lenses thinking they would fit into a pork pie housing as the design and shape is almost a dead ringer - however pork pies are about 3" across and this is only 2". It was advertised as series 1/2 but it is neither pork pie nor D and is different to series 2s.

It is about the same size as late model landies but is very flat in profile and not conical like later models - in fact it is very similar is size and profile to various landies front partking lights.

I have checked the FWD catalogue and this lense does not match any of the landie lenses listed. It is a lucas 488 lense, with numbers BS 2516 and is grade 3?.

Does anyone know what it is off.

Thanks

Garry

The 488 lens is used on a wide range of English cars from the 50s.

I hope you didn't pay too much.

Nearly bought some of them myself. I believe the Lucas 489 is used as parking (side) lights for front of series vehicles.

L488's were used on Morry minors and similar era uk vehicles.

Found this mob LIGHTING/FRONT/REAR : Morris Minor Parts - Morris Minor Spares Online Shop (http://www.morrisminor.uk.com/shop/lightingfrontrear-c-38.html) has a lots of Lucas lighting options - and appear to be cheaper than many Land Rover outlets. You can see the L488's here - they have a narrower chrome surround than the L489. They come in red, orange and white.

I've bought some L489 housings from them for Olute.

They look like the ones I have on WizBin the SWB trailer.

Leon has Pork Pie lights and the lenses used in them I think are truck clearance light lenses, the ones with a nipple in the centre. They fit quite well. Plus I have a couple of spare lights with proper lenses for Thomas, albeit second hand.

Do you have a brand and part number by any chance.

Thanks

I'll have a look when I get the chance, but I won't be home until New Years Eve, as I'm still at work on the Rock.

I think that you will find that is was fitted to NADA Spec. Landies commencing with the 1951. They didn't use the D lamps, just the L488. On the front they had to have double pole side lamps so they could flash the side and brake lamps for their turn indicators.

As Mrs Numpty says, they were also used on some of the Aust. No.5 trailers.
