Does anyone here have experience shortening the steering bump stops on a D2?

Is it just a case of unscrewing the ones in there and fitting shorter ones? Are there repercussions for any other components?

You can buy the parts off LR , or just shave 5(??)mm off the ends somehow,,

apparently the difference is AMAZING:eek:

Awesome thanks Pedro. I'll pull them out and machine them down.

I'll let you know how it goes.

do a search first Waz,, am NEARLY sure its 5mm,, :p

They made the stops to suit the 18inch wheels---
then bolted them to everything:D

I took 8mm of mine, magic. Rubs on RHS while stepping through uneven ground like a really steep driveway entrance at full lock, but on level ground there’s no rubbing.

BTW it’s a ‘99 TD5 with 245/70R16

If its not too much trouble & easy to do, can someone take a photo of the bump stops? Are they east to take off & shave?
Thanks,
Dave.

So...how long should the original bump stops be?

Some of us have purchased second hand cars and have no idea if they have been changed or not

Vehicles fitted with 16" wheels can have "either" 23mm or 28mm lock stops, vehicles with 18" wheels have 28 mm lock stops.

Don't take off any more than down to 23mm, otherwise you will get rubbing, and thats a silly idea imo just to improve the turning circle even more

If you take of 5mm down to 23mm, and it rubs, you can just add washers of around 1mm thick until its all clear, as some vehicles may need 24 mm for example.

Well the mods are done. Took them down to 22mm and it is a great success.

Let me set the scene - Stock Td5 D2. 235/75R16. (no lift).

Machined down to 22mm and screwed back in. No rubbing on the guard.

Things to note -

larger tyres may pose an issue
different number of turns centre to lock(2 right - 1.75left)
don't stress it too much on full lock as CV joints will be under more stain

Thanks to Pedro the Swift and Urban Panzer for assistance.

Have no idea why you would want to do this, the D2 has a good lock, only good for carparks IMHO.

Baz, it's an excellent cheap mod, takes a mile off the turning circle & great for the bush. Land rover sell the shorter stops but it's just as easy to trim them down yourself.

Baz may be like me and have the 23 mm stops from factory, in which case I'd agree.. not much point in taking off just 1mm.

But if you have the 28mm stops.. well then it's a no brainer..

Took off 5mm as suggested, you guys are legends...the Mrs loves the 'new' ability to park like a VW Tiuguan (****** testdrives!)!!!!!

so there I was,,
lying under my D2 in a strange car park surrounded by cars and people, removing my steering stops,,

only to find that I ALREADY HAD the short ones,,,:imwithstupid:

I still think it turns like a supertanker,,

maybe another couple of mm's:twisted:

Agree - As I said earlier, I shaved 8 of mine, now 20mm. The Disco 2 would nearly have the worst turning circle available on a modern pasenger vehicle.

But my question is: "Can I do this if I have the 18" wheels"?

NO!

well, maybe a smidgeon--;)

well, maybe a smidgeon--;)

So, I am guessing that as I could only take off a bees bum's amount, then it probably not worth getting my hands dirty for...:(

I'd PM slunnie,,
but the limits are VERY easy to remove,,
and if you take off too much--
very easy to add a washer to restore!

When I found this thread I thought that my prayers had been answered.

Having moved recently from a Disco 1 to a Disco 2 I like everything about the new beast EXCEPT the turning circle. I have nearly clipped the bus a number of times in carparks, and had to reassess U-turns due to the difference.

I went to remove my bump stops but currently neither of them is touching! The right hand one would be about 10mm short and the left about 5mm.

Any thoughts??

Cheers - David

The D2 with 18's will need a MUCH bigger circle than with 16's,,,

neither are really good in carparks,,

hmmm there is a post in here somewhere about steering stop lengths,,

I gotta say, the turning circle on my D2 is attrocious compared to my RRC and thats with the 23mm stops!

The RRC does half a cul de sac, the D2... well... lets just say i see both sides close up!!

Cheers

Only had my d2 for a bit over a month ,has 18in wheels, yeh i noticed the turning circle nowhere near as good as the old 300, i simply cut the stops down(removed 1st) with a hacksaw, worked well ! happy days Ross

Not if you're running my tyres

I have no problems with "her" DiscoTD5 doing U turns, it turns tight enough for me.
BUT it might be only comparative
I drive "my" Series3 109 tray back, and compared with my mates F150, even the old series3 turns tight.

My concern would be the extra stress put on the swivel joints.
