I polished the disco today and got carried away with tyre shine so i thought i would try and get the " poster shot " :blush: . Just wanted to see what you guys thought of the pic i took .........

Slight problem with an evening shot, the best light is either quickly disappearing or it is gone. Some fill in flash may have put some more colour back into the sky.

As mentioned the lights a bit poor and the sky is blown out. But nice work with the polish and worth a picture.

also your horizon looks like it needs an ever so slight tilt as it doesn't look quite right to me.....and think about your surroundings would of been a much nicer shot if you moved around a touch and took out that telegraph poll...and included more of the station

well you asked for a critique:

1. Background. Kills the shot. If you can't get the car out of the carpark then move it around until as much distracting background is out of the way as possible. The phone/lec lines are easy to remove so don't worry about them.

2. Lighting. It's flat light, not ideal so if there is a choice get a 3/4 lit view in late evening light. But, better than mottled light under the trees at midday.

3. Angle. Every car has a sweet spot for angles, and that one isn't it for the Discovery. Try walking away from it, zooming in and getting low down. Being low down also means you can more easily mask the background behind the car. A little steering lock, usually "away" from the camera also helps at times. This car has some points of interest on the front so I'd emphasise the front more than the side which has nothing remarkable.

4. Good point; the ground. It's not too dark so some light is reflected and the underneath isn't blacked out.

5. The sky is lifeless no matter what trickery you pull with flashes so compose the shot so the sky doesn't matter, ie filling the frame with the car. Given the car is red it will stand out nicely against the sky and the sky colour becomes an advantage; if it was a white or silver car you wouldn't do that because it'd blend in and look silly.

6. If you used flash as you've just polished it you'd be likely to end up with a bright spot in the paintwork unless you have some sort of diffuser or reflector. So I wouldn't bother for that shot.

Hi DM . It's on the loading(industrial) side of the station where Elmo is sitting and the passenger train side is behind the disco on the other side .

The second shot is better. But if you had chosen a lower camera angle (and zoomed in from a distance) you'd have hidden much of that distracting background, except for the pole which is easily cloned out. It would have been more dramatic too.

The key is to take lots of shots at different zooms and angles. You can discard all but a couple easily, but you cannot go back and take some more.

With the background there are two options; get rid of it as discussed earlier, or make use of it -- sometimes a background adds to a shot. Classic is a windmill, old shed, sometimes a horse...whatever it is sometimes it adds to the shot whether in foreground or background. It's possible the railway station itself on the left could fulfill that role.

Third shot best angle to my eye, looks good. Reason it's blurred is because of camera shake caused by using too low a shutter speed; use a tripod or raise ISO to compensate for lack of light. The headlights shouldn't be on, as you can see the camera cannot handle the dynamic range. Background still distracting; tree to the right of the car, loose branch above. Fill the frame or crop the existing shot. If you want the car to stand out from the background -- and where the background adds no value to the shot you usually do -- get the car as far away from the background as you can.
