Discovery 1 Rear Window Faults

Hey guys,
Relatively new to the forums and im sure that this has been covered before but i couldnt see anything so i thought id just ask if anyone has had issues with D1 rear power windows. Both Dad and i own 97 Discos, his is the V8 and mine the TDI. There seems to be a bit of a problem with the rear window electricals beacuse its as if they need to warm up before they work.

you hop in the car and go to put down the rear windows from the front or back and nothing happens. Checked the child lock and still no fix.

Is this a problem anyone has had and fixed? Would be great if anyone could offer some advice on this prob!

Sam, this is, I believe, a common problem that is easily fixed. It's probably due to a dry soldered joint in the window control unit.

Try a search on that.

Yep, definitely the window ECU.

I had the same problem, rear windows only worked when they wanted to and seemed to be better once the car had been running for a while. Then one day - window goes down and that's it! No up or down!

Under the passengers side of the dash, you undo the drop down kick sort of panel below the dash, there is a black plastic box ECU that runs the windows. From memory there are 3 screws that hold it in place, including a bugger of a one to get to at the back. If you have (I think it was ABS) it is even worse as the controller for that is squished in there as well.

Unplug the box and if you are handy with a solder repair any dodgy connections, or just replace the whole box. I replaced mine for about ($50 I think) from the wreckers, or you can get them occasionaly on ebay for a little less.

Is this relevant to the front windows at all?

Both my fronts stopping doing the up/down thing within a couple of weeks of each other.

However, mine look like they are trying, in that they move a few millimeters when you push the button. I thought it was a window track issue, but seems strange that after 12 years they failed so close together.

I had the same problem. Turned out to be a dry soldered joint on one of the relays in the controller.
The thread that Ron has linked to has all the relevant information. All up, it takes about 20min to fix.

The same ECU does control the front windows as well.

Not 100% sure, but I thought if the problem was with the ECU they would either work intermittently or not at all. If they are trying to move I would most likely think window track or motor.

Awesome, I've had this issue since buying the car and it was only last week that I was driving through the outback in 20 degree heat that I was peeved that they weren't working. Luckily being an LR owner I've got my tools on board and a gas soldering iron and my windows are working perfectly :)

Thanks mate just got home from a play at Bunyip state forest and the rear windows wouldnt go back up. Followed these instructions and bingo bango the windows work better than i have ever seen...

Haha that was the first problem I had with my '98 Disco...happened on the way back from picking the car up when I bought it hahaha it was a great way to start my owner/disco relationship ;)

mine has been intermittent since the day i got it and since i dont usually have passengers i never worried but today they worked going down first go but going up was not going to happen at all.. And the solder at fault stood out like dogs balls. Had it not been for this thread i would never have known where to look
