its not going very well :BigCry:

Started to paint the bonnet and its all falling apart:BigCry:

preped the bonnet all ok

mixed up the paint all good, went to spray not so good:(...start with I couldn't get it on even, I put that down to my inexperience and figured it would probably even out as the coats go on....

was getting alot of over spray and I remembered fusion saying he sprayed at around 45psi...I ask ian how do I adjust the pressure he said off the tank just turn the nob in the direction you want to adjust it (marked on the nob) so I did but only a tiny bit as little worried....

the spray is now great its going on perfect nice big pattern and its not building up...(and yes i'm trying to move left to right in a fluid manor) then all of a sudden gun starts coughing and spluttering:mad: pebble dashing the bonnet when i'm only half way up......not enough pressure there is me thinking i'm using the air in the tank, and realised that the compressor has not kicked in to top up the tank

now I have pretty patterns over the bonnet:mad:.

and to top it off I have had to spray it in the shed as it keeps spitting with rain outside and I can't move the bonnet on my own. The shed is too small and very poorly lit so I think I was just destined to do a crap job:BigCry:

You'll get there DB ;) . It'll get easier with the more you practice you do . you can always sand it back smooth again ..... sand paper fixes all ;).

Nah, leave it rough. That way you can stand on the bonnet & your feet won't slip :p.

Today is probably not the best day for painting as any moisture in the air can affect the finish too (humidity blisters).

sorry you are having problems. Suggest you paint your garbage bin, letter box, chook shed, garden shed and what else as practice seeesions before spraying your bonnet. I once had some paint and used a wrong thinners, that caused it to go lumpy in the spray gun pot. Filter your paint through old stocking is another hint that I have been told.

dullbird

well there you go part of the problem, was ian told me I wouldn't need the regulator on the gun!! as I can regulate pressure from the tank.......he also forgot to tell me he was guessing that and that he didn't actually know!

if I would of known that I would of asked on here...needless to say i have put the reg on the gun I was told 5 to 6 coats.....well i'm on my 5th and although some bits look OK some parts look like they are wet so probably a tad to much paint.

you think i'm likely to get it back with the 6th and final coat? if there are patches on the bonnet that still look a little wet will these dry and blend in? of will the bonnet always look patchy..

If it goes on patchy it will stay patchy, i would let it fully dry and rub it back and repaint tomorrow, sounds like you had too much pressure if the gun was bubbling and farting. Are you using a suction or gravity fed gun ?

dullbird
24th December 2008, 01:14 PM
it was gravity feed and it was lack of pressure I had run out of air.....

Cant paint the car tomorrow as I need the car to get to work

Hey Dullbird, do what my mates do....

Do all the prep work/labour intensive stuff yourself then call in an expert to do the painting. Cheap and very effective :D

I really wanted to learn it my self.....I'm not frightened of getting dirty just hate a shabby job..

update I just did my 6th coat which I'm assuming should be my last coat WITH the regulator on the gun and oh my god what a difference I dont think the job would of been half as shabby if this bloody thing was on in the first place:D

if i do decided to take the bonnet off again in a couple of days to re-do do I have to rub it right back to the start?

Just rub it back so it is all just "scrubbed" (youve taken any sheen off the shinny stuff and the rough out of the dry crappy stuff.

Then apply another 2 or 3 coats.

What paint are you using, sounds like acrylic?

If it is Acrylic then lay it on nice and wet (just hefore it starts running) then give it a light rub with 1200 and hit it with about 4 or 5 coats of clear and leave it for 2 or 3 weeks then give it a good cut and buff and it will look great.

It is pretty hard to stuff up acrylic paint job as you can just rub out runs and dry spots etc and the clear coat gives you plenty of shine.

Enamel and 2 pac are a bit different, it has to be good off the gun.

Agreed! Acrylic is the way to go.

Just get your color even and hit it with clear. Don't like the finish? Sand and re-do.

Patience seems to be the order of the day and you should have a good paint job.

If it's Enamel or 2-pack. Best of luck!!!

Dullbird is going for a flat finish so clear is not needed .

I haven't seen that expression since I read "Educating Rita".
I guess it's an English expression.
I can picture the effect - not what you want on a paint job.

I'm pleased to hear that you seem to be getting on top of the job after the shaky start.

DB, moisture in the air will leave you with a crappy job. you will get little blisters all over it. weather needs to be dry or you need to create an artificial environment that is dry.
preferably without the use of an open flame!

I don't have blisters over it yet!.........

:DI'm sure he meant to help:)

for a bloke to admit he doesn't know something is to admit weakness. you must understand that although he gave you the wrong advice, got the wrong paint and pretended he knew what he was talking about, he did it out of love and the need for you to feel secure in the knowledge that you are in the care of a "man of the world" who can offer advice and comfort when required, even if it is the wrong advice and the comfort he offers is to console you for his mistake.:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Take a few days break, grab some 1200, the correct paint and she'll come up perfect.

Hi DB
I reckon if you get a bucket of warm soapy water, sanding block and some 1200 grit paper and give it an even rub back you will end up with a nice even color of matt black (just dont rebuff it to get the gloss back). Years ago (even some times now) they paint cars with many laers of paint with a brush and then got to work as I mentioned above until they had the desired finish and buffed it to gloss. Some of the best paint jobs seen on hotrods weredone like this.
cheers
