Howdy,

Yesterday I bought a '00 Td5. The power steering had been making a quiet whine when cornering but was otherwise fine and we have been planing to replace the power steering pump.

However today I noticed the fluid was down 15ml or so. We topped it up with Shell Helix ATF III. This liquid was a different colour (much lighter) than the fluid in there already. Today I drove for around an hour and came home and parked it on the road verge where it sat for the day.

When I got in he car to move it into the driveay today I could barely move the steering. Checking the fluid level revealed it to be almost empty. A puddle had formed under the vehicle.

Is it possible that our choice of what I believecould be the wrong fluid has caused this? Or do you all think I could have a cracked hose or something?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Ben.

It could just be a hose. I had busted one coming from the tank, oil was pouring out everywhere. Turns out it was an aluminium section of the sucsion hose that was rubbing on another hose and it eventually rubbed through. I very much doubt its the wrong fluid, as long as its auto fluid or specific power steering fluid it should still work fine.

But check hoses first and fittings on Power steering box...

Also examine the Belt....
