Hi all,
I've noticed i've got a decent chunk of rust in my Defender's rear cross member. :o Looks like time to cut out and weld in some fresh stuff!
Can anyone recommend anyone around Melbourne that would do a good job of this?
Thanks,
Nathan

mine did it too on the two outriggers of the rear crossmember. i cut out the rusted sections as uniformly as i could, then made up replacement peices out of gal square tube, (cut and shut) the my more talented mate wleded them into place. i tidied the surface up and painted them, now only a trained eye can pick it.

Cricky Thats only 13 years old! - Just for my curiosity does yours have any rust proofing on the chassis? did you do any sort of rust prevention on the Chassis? Any chance of photos. I'd like to work out how to prevent this sort of problem happening on mine.
I've got a 1972 range rover that's got no rust at all on the chassis - so it must be something about the defenders that causes this.

mine's an '84 mod V8. rust was from getting around for about 8 years with no rear mudflaps. the mounting frame fell off where it attaches to the folded metal lip at the bottom of the rear guard from metal fatigue and i kept putting the job of fixing it, off.

I haven't had it since new so I don't know its history - likely it's been used to launch boats. There doesn't seem to be any rust in the chassis, just the cross member and some other bits and pieces.
Not so surprising for a Defender, it's probably been driven thru who knows what in its life! :o
