Yesterday when in Dubbo I saw a Discovery 1 in the supermarket car park. Very well looked after, 300Tdi, I think, although I am not really up on when they changed from 200Tdi.

Stuck to the back window was a sign "For Sale", with the usual contact details and a price of $5,500.

This struck me as being fairly low for a diesel of that age in good condition (V8, yes). But I really have no idea what the real car market has done in the last few months - except that I am sure it has gone down.

Anybody have any real experience of what it is doing? Not that I am looking for another vehicle.

There aren't many buyers out there(all the doom and gloom around people may not be too keen to spend up on changing cars), hence if the vehicle needs to go, the only way is to drop the price.

Great for buyers whom have some funds. :D

Bad for those trying to get rid of their old car.

would be a bout right for an "asking price" I guess... depends so much on condition & history

the asking prices for various series LRs never fail to amaze me....:)

the D1 has truly become "the thinking man's S3" as far as a swb 4wd vehicle goes, eh?

wonder if this'll draw some comments................:)

I've found that a lot of cars are selling before the ink on the ad can dry. I've missed out on three cars in the last two weeks, all within three days of being advertised.

I know that I'll keep missing out unless I go into "arrogant smart alec mode", that is turn up with a massive wad of cash, wave it around and make a deal on the spot if its a good one. A bloke in our street bought a 1997 D1 diesel, faultless, very tidy albeit 325,000k for $3,500 [using arrogant smart alec mode].

I suppose he would have to think that he got a "good buy"...... (the former owner could equally have though "goodbye" I guess :))

when you think about it, there is a lot a engineering and ability in a vehicle like that for the money that they now cost......(providing always, of course, that the new owner has some $s put aside for inevitable repairs & maintenance).

Ahhh come to Townsville, there is a bloke with a same era V8 trying to sell it for $9900, and it is not a pristine vehicle:eek:.

If I found a reasonable 300TDI for around 5K I would buy it if it was local. But as you can see I have buckleys here.

John, my son and I just bought a 94 Disco with 12 months rego, 300TDi, Auto, 8" X 16", alloy wheels and tyres, Alloy bullbar, good condition inside and out, 345,000klms from our local Ford Dealer for $2750, too good a price to leave.
Same dealer has a 97 Disco V8 Auto, very nice condition for $9000, go figure. Local Nissan Dealer has a 93 3 door Disco 300TDi manual R380 for $8000, but will take $5000 and probably less with a bit more haggling, Prices are all over the place, a lot of Diesel owners around here are selling because of the cost of Diesel, still $1.40/litre, Regards Frank.

Everything is cheap and negotiable these days...

I just booked a holiday to the goldcoast. Rather than book over the internet I emailed a few places and found that accomodation places are desperate for bookings and negotiated a great rate for 9 nights!:D

And with car prices, given the price of cars I'm currently looking at upgrading from my D1 300tdi.

Just trying to work out to what. Looking at a very late D2 or maybe a D3. Even looking at a patrol for comparison sake.

Its a buyers market.

I paid $5400 for my 99 D2 v8 with 185k on it - but then it was a repairable stolen/recovered insurance write-off and ended up owing me about $7500 all up by the time it was repaired, registered, and fully back on the road.

Still a lot of car for the cash though and not had any issues with it yet after a good few months usage.

Looking at listing prices on ebay i was thinking it looked like prices of v8s have stabilised a bit since fuel costs dropped off again, certainly not noticed what looked like some of the panic sales of big v8s going very cheap that seemed to be going past a couple of months back.

I have not been to any car auctions since mid-November. The withdrawal of floor plan finance by the two major lenders should make a huge difference to the way most smaller used car dealers operate. They will have to use their own money, or overdraft if they have any collateral, or simply accept any terms being offered by any lenders still in the business. Most don't have any money, or any property they can, or are willing, to put up as security. Prices should drop at auction. I will let the forum know what I see.

One large scale Brisbane dealer of 34 years standing has already closed down. He is of retirement age and has chosen to do so after his floor plan financier pulled the pin. Decided to sell off his stock rather than purchase it using his retirement fund, I imagine.

Soccer mum neighbour bought a new full spec Disco V8 in 2002 for $78,000;
not so long ago she traded it for a new Kluger.
The never offroad full service history Disco with 110,000ks returned just $12,500.......
