View Full Version : Pulling heads off V8, anything special to look out for?

Gonna rip the heads off the Disco when we get home as the passenger one is weeping coolant out the front and the drivers is weeping out the rear. The car still drives perfectly, yet is using a little bit of coolant. The plugs looked ok when I changed them today and there's no water in the oil.

Anyhow, aside from sticky valves, what should I look for?

Also... should I want to ram a bigger cam in it :P is it as big a job as I've been told? Been told it's a sump off operation... can't imagine why, but then again, wouldn't be surprised if the rear wiper needed to be at 3 o'clock and the LHR window down 26% :)

Oh.. and cam suggestions for use with factory ECU for those in the know.

the rover is a dry liner so you wont get water in the oil anyway

i haven't ripped a rover motor down complete either .. Changing the cam should only involve the following basics

Remove radiator & front grill / etc
Removing the water pump & front timing chain cover + chain
Remove Plentium valley intake
Remove Rocker gear & Hydraulic lifters
Remove Dizzy

Sump off? ... dunno what for

Mike

I reckon the chap that told him sump off is confusing the Crank Shaft for the Cam shaft.

Hey Boxer,
seeing as how you are one of Stooges associates, give me a call on 0408 995 635 if I can be of any assistance.
It is an easy job but time consuming, I can help where possible.

Phone or PM is fine.

Sump off so you can find all the bits and pieces you dropped in there while doing the job, LOL, BTW don't forget to run in the new cam and lifters if you replace, Regards Frank.

I changed my cam recently and had to tilt the sump to get the front timing cover off. You'll find it easier to re-seal the bottom of the timing cover with the sump off.
For the sake of a gasket it makes sense.

I reckon just ask Khos "Disco_owner". He is an expert now.

You can get the timing cover off without tilting the sump.
The 2 front sump retaining bolts can be unscrewed from the lower block by applying another nut onto the thread end and locking this nut against the existing nut. Then simply unscrew the original nut out from the bottom of the block.
This allows you to slide the timing case forward. To refit just apply a good RTV sealant to the sump to timing cover area and reinstall the sump bolts.
To install the new cam with engine in vehicle, you remove the radiator and undo the Aircon condenser, then unclamp the aircon hose retaining clamps in the engine bay so to allow the hoses to remain connected to the condensor, but allows the condensor to be moved by GENTLE twisting to allow access for the camshaft to be with drawn through the gap created. I tied the condenser out ot the way and held it up with rope to the bonnet catch
