Hi all:)
We finally got the axles out of the front of the county (right hand short axle was broken) now we need to seperate the axle from the county CV to replace it.
Any ideas on how to do this?, or can't it be done at all??

Thanks in advance Tim.

The manual says to hold the drive shaft in a soft jawed vice and using a soft faced mallet drive the CV joint off the end of the shaft. There is a small spring clip in a groove around the shaft end that holds the shaft in. This needs to be compressed to allow the shaft to come out.

Thanks Ray:)
That makes two who have told me the exact same procedure:thumbsup:

Copper hammer, soft jaws in the vice and alot of swearing;)

or a Heavy duty nylon bush over the broken axle then after vicing hit the bush with the FBH.

Ive had one where cutting the axle square about an inch form the CV, drilling the center of the axle, cutting a thread and then making a puller was the order of the day after we broke the FBH.

Well we've tried everything, tried bashing it with every hammer (including a sledge hammer) we where going to try tap a thread in and make a puller but the tapper just won't do it, and just then i notices a hairline crack in the CV:mad:

I have never had to belt them with a hammer to separate.Open the vice wide enough for the axle to go through with clearance. CV upwards, axle down, lift CV side about a foot with one hand and drop onto vice jaws while pulling axle with the other hand. They usually come out with the first or second drop. Maybe your expander ring has come partly off the axle groove and locked in which case it can be removed by distmantling the CV. Doesnt sound good with that hairline crack.

<snip> ... Doesnt sound good with that hairline crack. and the County CVs are some of the better ones! :( :(

We started of softly doing things like you explained than gradually got harder:twisted:
And ended up with the sledge hammer:angel:
The crack was there before the sledge hammer came into it:(

and I thought I was going to be the only one to see one of them....

can you move the axle in the CV mount at all?

if not after you get the new one do me a favor and dissect it with an angle grinder.

cheers.

Hi Dave
It doesn't move in or out at all (locked solid) someone said you can take them apart without an angle grinder, is this true??
Otherwise dad is keen to find out what is wrong with it via the angle grinder:twisted:

Heres an Army EMEI on how to disassemble the CV and replace the balls.

you can get them apart without damage but if its damaged (cracked) its not worth doing.

there should be a little in out movement of the axle (a few thou).

the last one that I saw that cracked the outer shell had cracked from internal stress.. (near as we were able to work out)

the axle had twisted inside the center part (which is why It couldnt be gotten apart even with the FBH and a puller) this had expanded the center part which forced the balls outwards and that put a series of cracks into the outer casing.

Oddly the cracks turned up on the back of all the thicker parts of the CV in a near perfect ring but not in the shallow part (of the outer casing) where the balls sat.

ran fine in a straight line but clicked more than a school yard of teenage girls with any steering input. before we finished the trip the axle broke off on the diff end which permitted the use of the abuseomatic toolage.

Im sort of into post failure analysis as a "keeps me amused" hobby which is why I asked. I don't like a non repeatable failure mode so if yours has done a similar thing then its not a one off.

That sounds more like it to me;)
Where not even shore if the crack came from hitting it with the FBH, so that sounds quite likely, we'll pull/cut it apart and see what happened;)
I'll let you know!!

Dont live in the illusion that the ones that you buy on ebay are the same quality as the originals.
Its quite common to hear people mouthing off as to how weak they are but they buy rubbish
