Obama's Use of Complete Sentences Stirs Controversy?
Stunning Break with Last Eight Years

In the first two weeks since the election, President-elect Barack Obama has broken with a tradition established over the past eight years through his controversial use of complete sentences, political observers say.
Millions of Americans who watched Mr. Obama's appearance on CBS' "Sixty Minutes" on Sunday witnessed the president-elect's unorthodox verbal tick, which had Mr. Obama employing grammatically correct sentences virtually every time he opened his mouth.
But Mr. Obama's decision to use complete sentences in his public pronouncements carries with it certain risks, since after the last eight years many Americans may find his odd speaking style jarring.
According to presidential historian Davis Logsdon of the University of Minnesota, some Americans might find it "alienating" to have a President who speaks English as if it were his first language.
"Every time Obama opens his mouth, his subjects and verbs are in agreement," says Mr. Logsdon. "If he keeps it up, he is running the risk of sounding like an elitist."
The historian said that if Mr. Obama insists on using complete sentences in his speeches, the public may find itself saying, "Okay, subject, predicate, subject predicate - we get it, stop showing off."
The President-elect's stubborn insistence on using complete sentences has already attracted a rebuke from one of his harshest critics, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska. "Talking with complete sentences there and also too talking in a way that ordinary Americans like Joe the Plumber and Tito the Builder can't really do there, I think needing to do that isn't tapping into what Americans are needing also," she said.

So p38arover, are you an elitist? :p :D

Although guilty of it myself at times, I find it sad that the english language is butchered so readily by many. The fact the Obama can and does talk "correctly" shall we say, is a huge positive in my books. With the advent of text and other forms of instant messaging and communication methods, George Orwell was pretty much bang on the money with many of his predictions, namely that of "newspeak". This is both a facinating insight to have back in or around 1949 but, also very scary that many of his predictions have essentially come to fruition in some form or other:eek:

I can only see positive in Obama's grasp and use of the language and those who say he will not "connect" with America or the world because of this need to take a long hard look at themselves...........then either pick up a book or go back to school:eek::D

My opinion of course, Mick

I think I'm being confused with someone else.

I'm afraid my spoken word is not the same as my written word in grammatical terms. I speak colloquially.

Am I elitist? I don't know. Maybe I am in some ways. I suspect it will take others to decide that.

However, in respect to Obama, I think it's terrific that the leader of any nation can speak well. Many great (and not so great) leaders have been great orators - but that doesn't mean they were grammatically correct.

It hasn't been made clear whether Obama can speak at a level appropriate for his audience. I would hate people to think he is a pompous ass owing to the way he speaks.

I would hope that the average American isn't alienated because their president actually speaks whole sentences which are grammatically correct; I hope they are in fact inspired by him.

I heard Bush on the radio today making some announcements, and bloody hell, what a difference! It is really noticeable that Bush has nothing on Obama when it comes to public speaking. The sooner Bush shuts his mouth, the better for him.
