View Full Version : My holiday is over...

More than a month ago I set off from Ballarat Vic for a 4 and a bit week holiday up/down the east coast, going as high as Yeppoon (35 km north of Rockhampton, central QLD coast area), in a 97 Disco SE V8 Manual.
Car did very well, only blight was the battery died, but the old one was 5 1/2 years old...!
Less than 400 km from home, whilst overtaking a truck on dual carriageway, rock has chipped and cracked my windscreen, but as this is covered by my insurance I am not really counting this as I don't have to part with any $$ for it heh.
After some 6600 km's, I have worked out the fuel economy, coming in at 15.5l per 100km, which I think is pretty good as the air con was on practically the entire time, the car was chockers with stuff, and touring with 2, sometimes 3 people. Additionally, time was spent in both Brisbane and Sydney in heavyish traffic, so all in all I am quite happy with the economy. Average fuel cost was $1.01 cents per litre, ranging from 84c per litre (Brisbane) to $1.18 (Narrendera NSW), I certainly picked a good time to be travelling!
Anyway, this forum is quite often filled with problems, so thought I would share a good example of a Discovery doing a damned fine job :)
IF the pic works (I am new...!) it was taken not far from Bundaberg.

tinsel is a no-no for fuel economy.

Good to hear. We did about 4000km over the break and I was getting about 15L/100 even with the 33s :)
I pity the Toyota owners who don't have the nice note of a V8 to keep them happy

tinsel is a no-no for fuel economy.Maybe but he's compensated for that by removing the wheel nut covers.
Good to hear you had a near trouble free trip :).

Diesels are certainly more economical, but I looked for a petrol so it can be put on to gas.
If Diesel wasn't 30% more expensive than petrol, I would have gone down the Diesel path - but I do agree with another poster, I do love the V8 Sound :)
Hopefully Diesel will come back to where it should be in cost Vs Petrol...

Im doing Sydney - Brisbane - Sydney next week in my 97 D1 V8.
If I can get anywhere near your 15.5l / 100km, I will be a very happy boy. Im getting about 20l / 100km so the difference in range between mine and yours is 130kms!!!!

Very good
We're doing 3 months after Easter in our 97 TDi taking in Flinders Ranges, Gammon Ranges, Oodnadatta Tk, all around Alice, Uluru, McDonnell Ranges then up to Mt Isa, Winton and back down via central QLD, NSW.
We hopefully will have no vehicle issues - I'm having everything checked over before we go.

Well once I get mine converted to Gas, I will have a 134 Long Range tank up for grabs hehe - that would give you a bit more distance :)

CraigYou should get 15l/100km easily. My 3.9 RR gets 15l/100km when loaded at 90kph & my 4.6 RR gets 13-14l/100km on a nice country run.

I think the 100kph is the clincher, most hwy's, and therefore thousands of km's we did were 110 kph, which I think eats into the economy a bit.
Otherwise, I get around 13l per 100km.

Did our Sydney - Bribie Island - Sydney trip and just got back and I was very keen to sort my fuel economy out.
Happy to say that my averages over 2200Ks and 4 complete refills with some left in the 5th tank were 14.2L/100km, 15.9L/100km, 17.7L/100km and 14.4L/100km for an average of 15.4L/100km. Im rapt in that.
I did 110km/hr when I could - the car seems looser and seems to cruise more comfortably at this speed rather than 100ish. Buggered if I know why.
Also buggered if I know why I had a discrepancy between 14.2L/100km and 17.7L/100km on the same day!!!
DJ - I think I'll pass on the LR tank mate.
Scouse - it seems the economy isn't all that bad after all. Its the 1st big road run we have done in it and the numbers just about match yours...so its all good.

A damn good question Mrs HH and when I come up with a damn good answer, I'll get back to you.
Personally, all I can offer right now is the feeble 'sorry, we just didn't have the time'.:no2:

as the speed gets up around 110+ the V8 arrives at its peak torque,, much nicer to drive at those speeds:cool:

I was this close to buying a V8 Disco... God they sound good. Lets be honest, you don't buy one because you are worried about economy.. But they are a sweet motor.

You're right there Klappers with your fuel economy statement.
We have got ourselves a massively competent and reliable 4wd that goes just about anywhere and its as comfotable as my lounge chair. Because its a V8, its now worth just about nothing. Its the brides daily driver and does about 100kms per week.
Fuel economy in our case doesn't come into it....and it sounds a little bit nice too!!;)
