Gday

Pulled my fuel tank out today to put the tank guard on.

On a standard tank there is second skin. Ill let the pictures tell the story. But basically I had a pin hole rusted through, and ended up putting another tank in.

Pretty sure this second skin is on all tanks

So just something to look out for

Yeah same problem with the 90's fuel tank hence why we had to get it welded up in Alice Springs

Well  The tank I put in, has a bloody hole in it as well, so going to have to get one welded up; thinking the original one and just have a new bottom welded in :)

Then just have to put it back in :(

Another reason why plastic tanks make sense.

Yeah, very common. I had been told a good way to combat it is to inject silicone all through the dead space. Don't know how easy that would be though.

Loving the NT spec safety gear...

I replaced mine years ago and the new on did not have the second skin/protector alias rust starter. Although I think its beneficial to have the second skin I dont think its worth it as they all rust between the skins.

No one up here is prepared to weld a new bottom in my tank :(

So rang up for a new one, $420. Bugger that

More calls later

Found someone who is prepared to do some soldering for me, so Ill post up pictures once its done

So unless anyone has some smart relatively cheap ideas? Plastic tanks? Anything ..... :)

Got to be one somewhere have you tried any of the LR wreckers like TRS or British Offroad. Mind you $20 doesn't sound that expensive... Have you priced a tank from Long Ranger or similar? I think that will knock you over.

Just in the process of cleaning it up for soldering. Thinking I might just do the soldering as a temporary fix and wait for a second hand one to come up.

The irony is, I bought a second hand one for my old Defender and had it sitting under the house. Thinking I would never use it, I sold it about a fortnight ago

Ill keep a look out for one, and if anyone sees one could they please tell me :)

Thanks

Just reread my post...

Yeah $20 doesn't sound much... must have missed the 4. Even so $420 doesn't sound too bad a price. A 45L aux tank from OL is more than that:(

yeah that happened to mine i had a bad leak under mine for a few months so we took it out and it was rusting down along the weld and then under the outer skin so we took it to a guy and he patched it up (a guy who also does radiators) and then took an extra precaution by putting silicon down all the seams and then painted the tank, then cleaned out the tank (wich tooks ages of blowing out with a vaccume cleaner) then before we put the tank back up we sprayed the whole back end with (i forget the name of it) a thick black tacky rust preventative paint then put the tank back up, she is as good as new "for now" touch wood.

I had all the means of welding, brazing and soldering plus nitrogen to purge the tank with but wimped out and epoxied up the bottom then re-painted.

Been fine for the last two years.

Found 4 holes rather than just the 1

I had the same on my County.........thought there was just 1 hole until I wire brushed it all back.
I ended up using POR15 'Metal Ready' and 'Tank Seal' on the inside and outside of the tank. PPC - Tank Sealer (http://ppc.au.com/coatings_sealer.htm) POR15 make some excellent products.
26,000 kms since the repair including 8000 kms of Outback and no problems.

Injecting silicon does Squat... it wont stick to dirty metal..

Got the new one in. My welder ended up cutting a new bottom and just welding it over the top of the bottom (if that makes sense ;) )

All for the price of two 6 packs :)

I would have to say the most bloody annoying thing, in possibly the whole world is doing up the nut that joins the tank pickup, to the hose

Applied a couple of coats of Kill Rust Primer then a coat of Gloss black enamel  so should be all good for another while :)

Havent had a chance to check its not leaking, only got home at 9:30 and most of the Servos were shut :(

Disco should be plastic and has two straps and no tin plate.
