hi all,

ill be buying a set of maxxis bighorns in the next few days to go onto a a second set of steel wheels to be used when i want to get the disco dirty and the highway terrains on my alloys are going to relegated to around town duties as they are at about 93.5% wear. i am at the moment about to start planning a two week trip from brisbane up to cairns and around the daintree with my misses and what i want to know is is it worth buying a new or even second hand set of all terrains to go onto the alloys for the trip and save the bighorns, or will the maxxis stand upto the 6000km trip? the current road tires are becoming borderling and i dont want the hassle on our holiday and the only reason for using the bighorns is we intend on doing a fair bit of offroad driving in and around the daintree so id like the piece of mind. or should i bite the bullet and buy some AT's?

has anyone done big trips on the bighorns? will road noise get to us or is it just not worth destroying them? if i get an AT it is prob goin to be the BFG or the silverstone copy of the BFG.

any thought queries or other theories is welcome

Hi Mate , Just got back from a camping trip which took 5 hours each way . I have Bighorns on and never noticed the tyres making a great deal of noise . It never bothered the missus or kids .

I use my Bighorns as my daily tyre, they do have the usual muddie hum but they arn't too loud (i have both mufflers cut out so i hardly hear them :p)

I find the biggest difference when im just moving slowly for some reason thats when the vibration is worst, iv had them balanced!

But i would just use them they are a great handling muddie not too loud 40psi on road and 25psi on dirt :)
and great wearing the trip will hardly bother them just get your alignment and balance the tyres as muddies are the worst for balance!

I would add that they grip wet roads better than most A/T's. Pat

Firstly, I don't run them everyday.....have others for that.
I bought a set (32"11.5/15) and have done 8400klms which included Brisbane to Alice via simpson(Both Ways). All of the finke desert race track(Finke to Alice) and lots of black stuff, over a 4 week period. I collected 2 punctures which were repaired with tyre still on vehicle(both drivers rear). One railway spike. (Finke) and one old home made square nail (Lake ayre). Front tyres look near new, still have some moulding marks left on them. Rears, have suffered cuts, nics and general rock blasting.(look like under my car does). Tread depth has not altered on fronts and rears have lost 0.4mm. (There was this much variance in tread depth from new!) Hope this helps.
