Hi,
I bought a 86 county last year 200 000km on it. After 6 months it started getting a rumbleing noise/vibration in it around the 100km/h mark.
I stripped it and found the axle tubes rusting, and the bearings pitted.
New bearings all round and a maxi fitted.
I used the original shims and as far as i could tell had the right preload and backlash according to the good book.
Now it has the same noise as before, nowhere near as bad though, between 98- 110km/h, mainly between power on and off.
Any sugestions?
Cheers Albert

I should add it is in the rear diff, and I have done up the g/box & t/case and tried borrowed a diff to be sure thats where the noise was.

Did you set the pinion to the correct contact point on the crown wheel with bearing blue? You may have to lap them in.

No I only set preload & used original shims. I assumed the noise was the pitted bearings and rust in the oil.
There is a place in sydney that will do a complete reco for $800. Drive in and drive out that afternoon! Wish I had found out about him earlier.

I had mine done at Diff lapping in Brisbane for $470 and I supplied the bearings

Hi All,

Mine has the same sort of thing...around 90-100 on the backoff mainly...well that's when I can hear it. Also there is a bang now and then...only taking off from the lights.Replaced pinion seal not long ago and also oil...oil looked good no water. Uni's on mine look good.
