I took my disco 1 to a mechanic yesterday to get a quote on a tailshaft grinding noise, and i got a quote back today, what had happened was the rubber bit (forgot the word - tired) inbetween the tail shaft and where it joins the diff had worn out and pretty much buggered up my tail shaft joints something chronic... anyway the point of the story is that they quoted me $1000 yes thats $1000 to get it fully repaired with a second hand tail shaft! and i told them to forget about it, so i called up brittish offroad on the sunny coast and ordered all the parts i needed to do it plus some extra things i wanted for only $350 with postage, now hows that for a bloody rip off mechanic! won't be going back there thats for sure.

Used rear shaft, D1, about $200. A new coupling kit, about $190. A rear flange kit, about $140. Labour about 1.5hours tops if they have trouble removing the spigot from the pinion flange. We're upto about $650 to $700 so yeah, depends entirely on what they pay for a second hand shaft. I can see $1K if they got stung for a used part to fix your bus. Don't be too hard on them, it might be that they just don't have good parts contacts. In future, if you want them to fit stuff for you then just get it yourself and supply it to them to fit. I have several customers who do this as they buy heps online and I can't sometimes compete with those prices. Also, did you consider changing to a uni joint to avoid this happening again as it obviously doesn';t get checked very often...

Are parts generally cheaper in Tas or more expensive? (Just curious). :)

Hey Panda:),
Actually used parts prices are all over the show, you really have to shop around down here:(
I was quoting those prices from what I last had to sell a used shaft (that I had to buy in) for to actually make something on it:o (I took a look in the markets just then and Cockie55 has one complete with bolts, coupling etc for $50!:D)
The other $$ are from suppliers, full RRP, and I added a little for freight to here too.
You win some and lose some down here with secondhand parts. Swings and roundabouts and all that:)

Yeah sorry Pat I just editted the post to read 'used parts'. Alan usually has most new stuff in stock, I was talking about sourcing second hand stuff down here. I have recently started trying to stock wrecks and so on, In fact sometimes Alan even gets the odd door switch or trim bit from me from some wreck I may still have, but I don't really have the room to keep much in the wrecked vehicle department:(
A lot of my used stuff ,especially freeloader bits, I get from TRS in Adelaide. Freight can be a killer though:mad:

I wouldn't have thought a U/S donut would wreck the shaft - did it just need a $100 donut and the rest was going to be cream for the mechanic.

I have in the past bought parts from Alan and on some things can be cheaper than buying from Sydney or Perth. Very professional and competent to deal with.

Did mine up at Ace's one year. Shattered the front uni on the shaft. $25 later I had a series uni joint on the front and no more rubber joint to fail again.

It's called being in business to make money and not just to make freinds :p
Ive rang parts joints and if you didnt know any better you would be led to pay several hundred more than what you need to.
I have in the past been caught out but I know that if I were to order a rubber coupling through my parts supplier it would cost upwards of $200 but I can get one from LR for about $130 and after market for $100 to $110.
Thay may also have only ever had 1 before which probably took them all day to get apart if they are not LR specialists.
I wouldnt be too hard on them, they have already lost $1k of work, thats bad enough punishment for most smaller mechanics, if your happy with other work they have done then I wouldnt sully them because of this.
I wouldn't have thought a U/S donut would wreck the shaft - did it just need a $100 donut and the rest was going to be cream for the mechanic.
Garry
If you leave them for too long then they wear away at the sides of the drive flange and the flange on the tail shaft where the bolts go through and then yoiu have to replace them.

Yeah i think it has been happening for a while, you see i got the car from my dad and he was always aware that there was a clunking noise (for about 3 years now) and since i have been taking it offroad i think i may have finished it cause it started to like grind and make all sorts of noises. When the mechanic looked at it he said the whole area was about to fall out (tail shaft and cuplink and diff yoke) which is no surprise to me, hence why i need a new tail shaft etc.
In reply to Justin Coopers first comment about the prices and where they got it from, they said they had called brittish offroad (because i told them to because they are the cheapest around most of the time) and thats where they got their quote from, hence why i was very annoyed!

I'd get rid of the donut altogether. I found i was changing them annually after the lift so had a uni fitted.
