Defender 2003 TD5.
Since the last service where a reasonably reliable workshop replaced the timing cover bearing, i've noticed that there has been a metallic squeal as the engine wobbles to a stop. I can also reproduce the metallic squeal by nearly stalling the engine.
Any ideas?

That squeal is more than likely the belt. If it was recently replaced, check that it is exactly the right length, IE part number, and secondly check that the tensioner isn't sticking. It must spring back readily when moved.

minesmade the noise since new... had the belt replaced under warrenty by LR and still the same. the noise is very metallic, quite different to a belt noise.

What is a "timing cover bearing" ?

Apparently on the TD5's there is a bearing and spindle pressed into the timing cover that the viscoud fan bolts to. It's this bearing that crapped on mine.

Interestingly - I had the Fender into the main dealer today to look for various issues, but they found that the "New" bearing that was installed 3000k's ago, had died again. This might have been the cause of the noise and the oil leak. At $190 just for the bearing I'm a bit ****ed off.
