Hi , i'm looking at buying an 84 rangie with a 3.9 motor duel fuel (tanks undernieth) 5 speed with a bit of a whine i think in 5th, could this be a problem? 2in lift and some sort of muddies. How do i find out if it 10spline or 24 spline axles. The young bloke didnt seem to know much about it as he's only had it 12/18 months. It was also RWC about 12 months ago. He's wanting $1500? Any info or giudence would be appretiated. Thanks Tony

Hi
The motor is retro-fitted, no doubt.
The box most likely a LT77 and car comes standard with 10 spline.
It sounds cheap, thats the way i like to buy.
The whine is kind of usual and depends on how loud.
If you buy cheap, you can spend money on repairs or acc.
The box is a little fragile and you must be careful on how much you load it up.
Best of luck.
Check the electrics, the few that it has anyway.

I spoke to my mechanic , he thinks it might be the other gear box R388? Its nothing special but it saves getting the D2 getting trashed and save it for touring.Oh and its got a snorkel for it as well , just need to fit it .

simple to tell. lt77 selects reverse forwards, doglegged to left of first. i believe r380 has reverse selected rearwards directly behind 5th.

Nice Find for price with 90s running gear:) The R380 can sing a bit in 5th. Change the oil and run a magnet to make sure not making metal.
Has it got a PH 2 interior? Seat belts in B pillars, fuse panel inside on lower left dash etc

sounds like a great buy. If you want your money back, let me (and probably a few others) know. I have been chasing something similar for a while.
