No idea, wife just rang and gave me the good news, i very rarely speed as my 20 year fine absence proves. It would only be while overtaking if at all but otherwise rarely go over 103/104 on the freeway.

You can write in and say you are very sorry and out of character as your 20 year history shows. They will waive the fine.

I thought that was every states rule As long as you had not had a fine for a certain amount of years then you could usually get let off. The only usual problem is they are reasonably slow to answer and you often had to pay the fine and then write in and then they send you a refund. Of course this may have all changed. Oh and was as long as you were in he lowest speeding bracket too.

Don't know about Vic, but in NSW they will generally waive a small ticket ONCE every ten years if you have a clean record.
20 years clean and a one point offence - in NSW it would be no issue.

Do we even have one point offences here? have the points changed when I wasn't looking?

you can always write to the speeding fine cops department sargent in chare and ask him to waive your speeding fine base don your previous record, of course whether he does or not depends on speed you were doing at time, generally they do waive fines when asked.

In this month's "Open road" (or whatever the NRMA membership magazine is called) they suggest that if you get a ticket and it wasn't for an offence that is too serious you are in a good position to ask for leniency if you're licence has been clean for 10 years or more. The powers that be may just give you a 'warning'. It's worth a try. :)
Anyway, short rant follows...
This situation just proves to me again how unfair the whole system of demerit points can be. Okay, fair enough, you were speeding and you got caught, but what about the 20 years of driving that you've held a clean licence for? If there was any kind of fairness those 20 years should be considered before the issuing any kind of fines and you'd perhaps get a warning letter.
With modern technology and with current surveillance as it is I think that it should be possible to keep track of all the times driver have been past speed camera and red light camera without doing anything illegal to prove your past good behaviour. I'm sure the computer issuing the fines can work out how long you've had clean licence for and refer to a human to make the warn/fine call.
If you were caught scribbling your name public property and it was your first offence (no previous convictions or warnings for anything like that) it's unlikely you'd get prosecuted or fined - it might been seen as being out of character for you and you'd get a slap on the wrist and be told to be on your way. So, why aren't speeding convictions treated in the same way?

I have had 2 speeding fines in my defender.
They are stuck up on my garage wall, I reckon any speeding fine in a defender should be considered a badge of honour....:D

I lost my license in a TD42 Patrol, but I must say the honour was sucked out of it by having to walk everywhere for 3 months. ;)
My mum lost 6 points on a double points weekend in the same Patrol towing a trailer going UP Bellbird Hill! :o :o :o

There are still some 1 point offences in NSW - using high beam on on-coming traffic (or vehicles ahead within 200m) is one, but there aren't very many.
As for cautions - fire off a nice letter explaining your circumstances (at the time of driving) followed up by your excellent traffic record and see how you go. It's always worth a shot. I'm guessing it was a camera and a low speed - geezz those speed cameras are a load of dung:twisted:
Good luck with it mate.

I wish I'd known about that 5 years ago. I'd finished work at 5.30 am, was going to meet a bloke to help him pick up a Rangie so was travelling on a road I didn't know. I was travelling with the traffic and got a flash for cash from a fixed camera - 67km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
Yeah, I know I should have seen the three warning signs.
That's been my only traffic offence in over 45 years of driving since I got my licence (well, for which I've been caught!) and 50 years of driving all told. I paid up.

In Brackistan we used to be able to ask for the speed camera pics, which used to cost $7.80. Don't know what they cost now.
As a result I have a collection of photos of all my cars from the last 20 years, but don't have one of the RRC with the new red body on it yet (3yrs).
I used to think that $7.80 and the fine of $130 odd was pretty good value for a good photo of my car getting driven down the road. The horizon in one pic is a little slanted but on the whole they're all pretty good.
A lot cheaper than engaging the services of a professional photographer.
cheers, DL

Hi Ron. You were acting on a noble cause - you should have been guaranteed a caution:p - i think there's too many signs and other distrations, let alone too many varying speed limits - but thats another discussion...as are speed cameras.
I remember being quite tired in the wee small hours and startled by a flash - i thought it was lightning (it was raining at the time) ...until i got the letter:twisted: Ah well, just another story.........

See Nick it wouldn't have happened if you'd been driving a Tdi manual, bloody hoon:D.
You can get your last 5 years history off the Vic Roads site. It costs $7.80 but if you attach it to your letter, it might act as an independant "reference" for the cop to consider, it might help get a favourable decision.
VicRoads : VicRoads (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au) - click check my driver history on front page.

Demerit point offences - search (http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/index.cgi?fuseaction=demeritpoints.browsehandler&category=&offence=&SubmitButton.x=57&SubmitButton.y=10)
These are for NSW, but the scheme is supposed to be national (and I assume it is, making references to trams)
This one was interesting for 9 points and $1269
Ride motorcycle with 4 or more unhelmeted passengers (rider not helmeted) $1269

After 23 years of driving I got my first ever speeding fine two years ago while out on the motorbike. 112 in a 100 zone. Way out in the country and not a car in site in any direction, other than the police car that zapped me. $110 and one point. No leniency for a clean record. As I drive for a living I was quite proud of a clean record. Gone now though.

Loanrangie,
Click on the attached link and go to my postg on the first page where you will find a sample letter that I and others have used and it has never failed, providing you qualify for a caution. Use it if you like or just take some ideas from it. Remember, you have to admit the offence, you cannot ask for a caution and at the same time say you didn't do it anyway. If you need any other advice then PM me dude. Lets just say that I aahhh .... work in the industry .....

By what you've said, that is utterly ridiculous Policing.
As a side note, they're not supposed to check someones traffic or criminal records to decide whether or not to prosecute - that intruduces prejudice which is something we don't want. Although demerit point (alleged 'safety')offences are not to be dealt with by 'caution' (Commissioners directive), surely at worst a reasonable fellow would stop you for a chat...
It disappoints me hearing those stories and yes, a clean driving record is something to be very proud of, particularly for a professional driver who sees and puts up with all manner of woeful driving.
Sad to hear of that mate.

Cheers Matt
On the plus side he was very friendly and asked all the right questions about my new (to me ) bike.
Recently when applying for insurance for my new Defender they knew about my traffic infringement. Appears insurance companies must have access to QLD police records.
But to me the whole incident was purely revenue raising.
