Is there a trick to removing the stereo from the dash of a TD5 Defender?

It's not the original unit.

Does the dash top ("crash pad") have to be removed.

thanks

Hi,

It depends on the radio itself. Some manufacturers make it quite difficult to remove for anyone except the thief.

The Land Rover Eurovox or later unit has 4 holes, 2 top, 2 bottom into which you will have to insert a neat fitting rod - skewer .... (I use 4 allen keys which I keep especially for this). When you insert these you will feel a retaining clip move. Then you just prise the radio out of the slot from the sides.

Some after market radios have retaining clips of various shapes and forms which require special plates with unique slots to be inserted to release the clips.

If you cant remove it from the front, removing the whole dash pad won't help either.

Good luck, Erich

Not quite true.

If you remove the dash pad (heater controls, grab handle first) you get access to the screws that hold in the centre dash console. Remove these and the console, and you should be able to remove the radio bezel by removing the screws that hold the wire clip on the back. This will enable the radio and the bezel to come out as one and then be separated on the bench. The bezels are usually broken any way :D:D and you have to do this to replace them!
