View Full Version : Considering Freelander 2

To all the Freelander 2 owners out there, I am considering the new Freelander and had a number of questions.

Firstly, those of you with the petrol engine, what fuel consumption are you getting around the suburbs. I have read that 12-13 L/100 km is possible.

Secondly, does the sunroof allow too much heat into the cabin during the hot summer days. Is the shade enough protection against the sun and heat?

Lastly, what colour combinations, interior and exterior, work best? Is there any colour combination that should be avoided? I know this is very much a question of personal preference, but it seems that certain colours are more popular than others. Is the almond leather interior difficult to keep clean? Does the black exterior always "need" washing?

I know some of these questions may have been answered in other threads, and I apologise for any duplication.

Thank you in advance for your comments,

I have a diesel so can't comment on the fuel consumption of the i6. Here is some opinions on that. Freel2.com - View topic - Fuel Economy of the i6 <Merged> (http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic2418.html)

I have a sunroof and on a very hot day it does let heat in enough that you can feel it on your head. The glass is tinted a little which helps reduce the amount of heat.

Colour as you said is all personal. I have a small child so a black interior for me. All I've done is put leather treatment on it so often and it looks fine and probably more comfortable now it has given a little.

You don't say where you live. In Melbourne, sunroof is fine!!!!

I'd recommend the TD4 over the i6 just for the low rpm torque when you are off road. Besides the diesel hauls ass! And its not significantly more expensive than the i6. In fact the saving on rego probably brings it back to par with the i6 in a few years.

Rimini red is a popular choice (Inside and I both have it - clearly Rimini red is the only choice for the stylish driver).

The black leather seems to be wearing very well for me. My Dad has a D3 with the light leather (I'm not certain its almond) and while it does show marks up more than the black it is easy to clean and still looks nice after 2 and a bit years. I use Armour All's leather cleaner and a couple of clean rags after I vacuum the car, takes 5 minutes to rub over the leather and it stays looking nice for weeks. It also makes it easy to get stains off such as sunscreen (which was the bane of my existence until I started using the Armour All more regularly).

The FL2 looks fantastic in black BUT it doesn't stay clean for very long. There is a black FL2 near where I work and on Mondays it looks great, good on Tuesday, average by Wednesday and filthy on Thursday and horrible by Friday. I guess that the owner cleans it every weekend because it always looks beautiful on Mondays.

I've got the i6 and at the moment, I'm doing around 13L/100km in the suburbs. I've managed to hit about 10L/100km driving from Perth to Dunsborough and back on 1 full tank of ultimate 98. With the diesel or petrol decision, depends what you use the car for most of the time. If it's for towing stuff and going off-road majority of the time, definitely the diesel engine with the higher torque. But for normal road conditions, petrol is the way to go as it has a bit more power over the diesel. Furthermore, you don't have to queue up to use the only diesel pump around.

My interior is black leather. I just find it easier to maintain and it always look classy and clean.

With the exterior, I've got the Santorini Black or something. Yes, depending on where you park it everyday, you'll need plenty of maintenance if you want it looking clean. I'm parked outside at work and there's lots of construction happening in the area. So as you can imagine, there's always a layer of dust when I leave work. I usually dust it off when I get home.

Having said that, it does look pretty good when it's cleaned!

Good luck on your decision!

I have the Td4, white with alpaca interior.

The Td4 is excellent. It is a very pleasant vehicle to drive. On the highway to Sydney at 110 I get about 7.9 l/100km. To and from the coast averages about 8.4. In the city goes out to about 10, but that is very definitely affected by the degree of stop/start motoring. On the beach at Fraser Island I averaged about 10.5 and on the inland tracks on the island it went about 17.

The white with tan interior looks good. I have kept it clean by making up larger mats than LR supplies. On balance it would be better to have the midcolour interior until LR supply mats which give a larger floor coverage. (How they can sell an off road vehicle with silly little mats I do not know.)

I bought the Fl2 after waiting for a year to see how reliable they were. I have been delighted with it.:)

I got a HSE in black with Almond leather and the metal trim piece. Looks Tops!

Go the Diesel if you want to offroad. The Power is really good for this size SUV. Fuel econ for me is about 7L for Highway driving with my 19's (Stock). 8.5L for highway driving on my AT tyres with 17inch rims

Around town its 9-10L per 100kms. So average I get off a tank is 680-750kms
