View Full Version : injection LPG on a HSE 4.6

I am currently looking at getting my HSE converted to LPG.
There is the standard IMPCO option and the injection option.
Now, I have been told by a reputable LPG shop that the '96 HSE 4.6 lacks 'intelligence' (electronics) for the injection to operate properly.
However, I read that a number of members here have the injection option and are very happy with it.
So what gives??
Any input/thoughts would be very much appreciated.

I have the gas injection on my 95 hse, it was the best thing i have done to the car.
My bet is the shop is not up to speed with installing the injection system in to a rover, they use another computer so it has nothing to do with the cars ecu not being able to work with the system. Only one place up here (ACT) would do my car. Evey where else told me it can't be done.

Willem is having a drive of my injected 1995 GEMS P38A tomorrow. Ask him what he thinks. The injected system runs its own computer.
I had a venturi system on it before that. Owing to continual backfires and airbox destruction, I removed it and ran LPG-free for quite a while. Prior to removing it, when the car was working hard up long steep hills, I changed back to petrol.
With the injected system, I don't notice any difference in performance on switch over to LPG

Injection on mine - much better than venturi style and as already said the injection systems run a computer of their own.
Plenty of stuff on this forum about gas injection take a look around
cheers,

Willem drove mine this arvo. He couldn't tell when the car was on petrol and when it was on LPG even when pushing it hard on the motorway or up a long steep hill

That's right! Ron's Rangie runs very sweetly on LPG and when we switched back and forth between LPG and petrol I couldn't pick the difference. There was no sign of struggling or labouring with LPG going up a long steep hill.
Going on the gas injection LPG is high on my list of priorities. Driving home from Sydney to Geelong petrol prices were up to 119.9 CPL and LPG was 39.9 in many places - tho some were higher - and as low as 38.9 at one servo on the outskirts of Melbourne. If you get a 4 cents off docket that's 35.9 CPL which makes even Rangie fuel costs pretty affordable!
If there is no power loss - and Ron's car demonstrates that there isn't - then there's no reason not to convert to gas injected LPG, except for the cost, because installation isn't cheap! $5000 is the best quote I've had.

Hi WIllem, Is that price in Melbourne or Sydney? If Melbourne, who was it?
Cheers,

I saved a bit of money on the install as I already had the tank from the previous installation and I reinstalled it, the gas lines and wiring back to the tank hadn't been removed so they could be reused, the manifold was drilled and pre-tapped for the LPG injectors when the engine was being modified (I knew the LPG would be going back on), and I had the converter mounting bracket which I refitted (different converter).
That saving in labour and parts amounted to quite a bit!

Well I ended up going for a conventional LPG system and so far its been very good, no noticeable drop in performance.
I have the donut tank fitted in the spare wheel compartment with the filler in the petrol filler 'housing'.
The switch/gauge is a very neat small unit installed on the lower right dash cover.
Will see how it goes with more miles under the belt.

Is your tank in the rear or underneath the vehicle?

I like the word toroid; it sounds rather exotic but in reality knowing what it means is more than a bit geeky!
What's it's capacity if you don't mind my asking?

The gas man who does our work vans uses Sprint gas gear & has had heaps of trouble with the gas injection systems on many different types of vehicles. They are blaming the quality of the gas.....but who knows the truth.
The vans we have at the moment use the old system, not the gas injectoin system, and we have little trouble with them, they are all Sprintgas.
I recently inquired about LPG on a new Hi Ace,and it has to have gas injection, only using Landirenzo,or there is no warranty by Toyota on the vehicle. When i contacted the guys who do the work,as my guy will only use Sprintgas, they recon Sprint gas gear is garbage.......
Wonder what the real truth is:confused:

Jeez, "toroid" is a word I learned in high school maths over 40 years ago.
The tank has 54 litres usable capacity which is insufficient in my opinion.

i thought that too, although i was going for a cylinder behind the back seat, so i upgraded to 72L useable, much better
