1955 86 inch questions

hi All,

There are two swinging brackets on the top of each windscreen on my s1 which Im not sure what they do? Can anyone tell me what these swinging brackets are for. They are long 20cm approx and swing off a bolt and clamp into another slot on inside top windscreen.

Which are the correct looking lights for the rear of 55 model - cant seem to find a photo to ascertain the right rear lights for brake, blinker reverse? thx

The brackets you mention are to hold the windscreen when it is in the down position.

When folded out, with the windscreen flat over the bonnet, the brackets clip into the bonnet hold down clips. This way the clips are now holding both the windscreen and the bonnet.

The correct rear lamps for the '55 should be the "pork pie" style with the wide metal base. There were no blinkers on the '55 except for the North American spec. vehicles which flashed the stop light. Reversing lamps didn't arrive on Series Land Rover until the SIII.

Pork Pie rear lights - very expensive and often worth more than the car :o

As Diana said, those brackets are to support the windscreen. They allow it to clear a possible bonnet mounted spare.

Think the flashing Brake light option was a bit earlier than that.
Option for S1 wagons? Me thinks.

You can see the supports from the screen onto the bonnet brackets on the orange(?) 86".

Your correct, the NADA spec 80 from late 1950 didn't have the Lucas "D" lamps but used the Lucas 488 with little aluminium blanking plates over the usual holes in the rear.

They were also the first to have the side lamps in the mudguards because they needed the double pole globes for the flasher devices to work. The interesting thing about these early NADA spec 80's were that the holes for the firewall sidelamps had been cut, but had plates spot welded over the holes.

I'll try to find some pics I've got on CD here somewhere.

The windscreen is hinged, with the screen flipped down those 'arms' at the top unfold and attach to the standard bonnet catch hoops. See attached photo. Hope this helps.
