Hi hfwebb,
Welcome to the forum.
If you look in the engine bay, there are two black plastic "boxes". One houses the starting battery, while the other is designed to fit a second battery. LR supply a clamp for the battery.
Hence, no separate setup is needed if fitting in the engine bay.

If you want to simplify things, Drivesafe on here does a kit for the D3 which includes the DBC, all wiring and the LR bracket. Have a look here (http://www.traxide.com.au/D3.html).
Also, have a search as there are a few threads (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-zone/44808-dual-battery-install.html) on this, including the small range of batteries which actually fit in that box! The Varta I run and one of the smaller (and much more expensive) Optima Yellow Tops are two of the options.

I installed the "Drivesafe" setup and was highly successful and appropriate. Also an easy amateur install. Battery selection is another story though. Found a more economical alternative to the very expensive "yellowtop" battery albeit only 60 amph but ok for an Engels fridge.

I should have said that I, also, have fitted Drivesafe's dual battery system.
It works beautifully. :):):)
I use it with a 60Ah Varta battery.

I'm another with Drivesafe's daul battery kit, it has to be the best kit I've ever purchased for a DIY installation for anything.

Got drivesafes kit too. Good system as it allows you to use some of the cranking batteries charge as well.:BigThumb:
