View Full Version : Bribie Island lagoons: Salt or Fresh?

I'm thinking of going to Bribie soon but I'm concerned that the flows from the lagoons to the ocean are sal****er. I'm not keen to drive through 2 foot of salt water.

Normally I'd just drive to the first creek and taste it, but in this case I will have to buy a permit before hand...

I've only been there once and the creeks were flowing. I assume that they are there every day or is it something that only happens after heavy rain?

Cheers, Steve

There you go....I have never seen the lagoons open to the sea. I just assumed they were closed lagoons.

To be honest I never tried the water to see if they were salt or not. Our dog used to drink out of the first one....but then again she drank the sea a few times too, silly thing.

Does anyone know if the lagoons are open to the sea at the moment? and I'd be interested to know what they are but at least I'd reckon brackish

NM.....too lazy to log Numpty out ;)

Have been going there a bit lately, in fact was on the beach with my daughters to await sunrise by 04:30 this morning. The lagoons may try to be fresh but they are topped up heavily every high tide and at low tide it is all that water heading back out. I time our trips to only be on the beach around low tide. The lagoons are easy to cross with only a few inches of water if in the right spot.
This morning it was amazing to see how high last nights tide had been. The high water mark was splashing up the dunes at the very top of the beach. If caught out in that tide you would have been well rooted.
You can also see the hight the lagoons would have got to.

We loved it, will do another sunrise soon, tides permitting.

Took some amazing photo's if only I was clever enough to follow instructions and show them.

depends on the water flow..

would be fresh if there has been rain.

ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS walk them first if they are broken thru as they can be shallow but soft as hell and you can lose a land cruiser to the sills in under 5 minutes and it is a bloody long walk back to the pub from the 2nd lagoon....

ask me how i know.... and no it wasnt mine and i wasnt driving :p

but i got to walk back to the pub with the owner while the girls had chicken and champagne while watching it sink to the bottom of the windscreen .....

needed a hough loader to dig it out....

Eh? Aah, took me a minute to work out what was happening.

Or has water become a dirty word in Qld? There is either not enough or waaaay too much.

Here is a shot showing the width of the beach on Bribie at the second lagoon. Low tide. Not much of a crossing at all but in some places around the lagoon itself you could not even walk without sinking.

How often do you come to the Island Kenley?

Next time your heading up this way PM me, I wouldn't mind having a look at your SVX :):):) PLEASE :D

Plus the missus loves driving on the beach and we havent taken our girls to the beach for awhile.

I have driven through the second lagoon with water halfway up the doors when we had the 75 series ute on a forum meet(4wd monthly) but Ive sold that now:D.

On the same day I watched a guy in a suzuki cross the same lagoon at least 10 times in a row cause he thought it was fun.:(

I think it is hilarious. I'll be looking for other innocuous words to litter my posts with.

Forgot to add that there is also the Inland track that takes you to the beach .You access it from White Patch were there is camping spots.

But most people access the beach from Woorim.

G'day Folks :)

I believe that Permits are also required for the inland tracks as it is now under the control of NPWS. Permits can be purchased from the Council Caravan Park @ Welsby Pde Bongaree business hrs :)

cheers

We just got back from a week at my brothers place at Woorim.
The 3 lagoons were open and the tides were huge - some serious erosion has been had recently.
We went up the inland track (yes Permit required) to check out the fort and so on. No way would I risk those lagoons, my Disco fears the smell of salt water let alone getting the least bit wet in the stuff.

Is the inland road a seperate permit or does the beach permit cover it?

Cheers

Gday Kenley
The one permit covers driving on all tracks that your allowed on there are other tracks your not allowed on.Theres sum great camping spots at Poverty Creek and Gallaghers.

Poverty Creek has toilets and two different camping spots eg..Fires allowed.

Not a Bad track its a bit bare since they logged it.

Aaron, we checked out Poverty Creek last week, not a single camper there. I expected to see the place packed because, as you said, its a top spot.
The track has some deep sand sections as well - wouldn't want to run a vehicle through there with only moderate clearance.
Bribie is a great part of the world.

I would have thought with school hoildays it would have been packed as well maybe they were all on the beach.

There are some deep sandy sections on that Inland track alright. I remember last time I was on 4wd monthly meet we came accross a 60 series on our side of the track bogged down to his diffs.Offered to help out but he said he never deflated his tyres and he would be allright once he did that.Only problem was he was right on a corner and it was very soft almost got bogged myself trying to get around him, but the defender didn't let me down.

I have passed a few RAV'S and Swiffs on the Inland track as long as you take your time and watch were your going its not to bad can also be a bit bumpy. Its not a bad part of the world which is why we may never leave :D.

I went down to 20psi after having a quick squiz at the type of sand. After 10 minutes, the Disco's temp was moving up. Went down another 4 to 16psi and all was good.
At Stockton Beach I have to go as low as 14psi otherwise the V8 seems to bury the wheels. I reckon there is more trial and error with tyre pressures in petrol vehicles. I was with my brother (who lives in Woorim) and he just drove in and off he went in his diesel Troopy with his tyres at about 26psi and no dramas.
I wanted to stop in a real deep bit and see if the Disco would get itself out again...the kids and the bride were not about to let that happen. Its all fun.

can you spell "clouds of sandflys and mozzies" :P

not to mention the fact you need a driving permit as well now...

top spot tho if you take the right any bug gear...

Yeah Inc we did note that there was a lot of surface water in and around the camp area and with the type of vegetation and lack of breeze, we kinda guessed the bities could be an issue.
Lots of great wildlife - bush turkeys, kangaroos and birdlife.
