Hi all:)

Do you think i should be happy with this flex in the front end??
(4'' shocks and 3" springs)
Not shore how much i should get, just seeing if i should play with shorter shock towers or not;)

Thee are a couple of photos of mine with an old 2" lift and STD schocks, I am just placing in Dobinson suspension upgrade and sorting it out, Flex photos on it to come when I can. Your front and rear travel down apears to be a lot better then my STD that is the schocks I am running in these photos.

Really what you should be looking at is how far the "stuffed"side is from the bumpstop. While it may not need to be on the bumpstop it should be within say10MM. sometimes if on teh bumpstop it may be too soft dynamically. If further away then the springs are too stiff to give good articulation, or the sway bar is preventing full articulation.
And it depends what you want to do, are you low speed rock crawling or high speed yumping? different springs are needed in each case.
So the photo doesn't tell much. Its for you to get down and dirty and have a look.

why would you want to shorten your shock towers if you lengthened your shocks??
wouldnt you want to lengthen your towers to make use of upward travell??

you will never get flex in the front as well as you do in the rear, its just the way it is. unless you want to seriously mod it:eek:

The bumpstops are still along way away on full compresion so i'm looking at extended bumpstops (no swaybars) i'm not planing on any flying over dunes, more camping and playing in the hills behind coffs harbour fairly regually:cool:

extending your bumptsops wont make it flex more it will stop it, what you need to look at is why its not reaching bumpstop????, are your shocks stopping this, are swaybars stopping it, are the springs to stiff, downtravel is of more value than uptravel, you could look at taller shock towers than a long travel shock

The reason i want to extend bumpstops is to stop the shocks bottaming out, not for extra travel, the shocks are the first to stop down travel not the springs, but the springs are fairly solid;)

another good reason why not to shorten your shock mounts. if you raise them by 50mm then the compressed length of the shock will get closer to the bumpstop, thats IF your spring rates arent to stiff. i found that 220lb in the rear and 190lb in the front of a disco worked really well on and off road, that coupled with 10'' stroke shocks front and rear. if your shocks are +4'' then your running 12'' stroke:eek: would be a good starting point as to why your shocks are topping out!
where did you get the springs and shocks from?

righto,
shanes springs should be dobbinsons, they may be a bit stiff but will work well with a bit of weight in the disco. as others said in the linked post the shocks are only +2'' not +4''.

Yep Shanes springs are dobbinsons, they are 3" flexy coils (only flexy in the rear) and he has only sold afew sets as he is still testing them and receiving feedback from the few who have bought them, he hasn't advetised yet;)
I didn't notice those posts about them only being only 2" longer then stock, i measured them against a standard shock and they were about 4" longer;)
Here are some pics of the rear springs against some 2" kings..

well, yes and no, what it dose is change where the opperating range of the stroke is. there is no point having 10'' stroke shocks if your only using 8'' of travell. say now you have 6'' down and 2'' up, if you raised the towers you ''should'' be able to get 5''down and 5'' up, roughly... as said the front is hard to flex so you might as well get the most out of it that you can. another thing is to flip the big cup washers on the radius arm chassis end's around, this frees the bush up and allows more movement.

Same. The axle drops nicely which is a function of the shocks you're running, but they don't seem to stuff all that well.
This is where I am with 10" travel shocks + 4" stiff touring springs but draw the comparison between the top of the rim and the sill lines (ie not the tyres/sill as these are a variable)

I'm thinking of lowering the shock mounts around 2-3''s and then make up some cones for the rear, that way i should get around the same amount of flex and still have heaps of up travel on the other side.
Then i can start looking at my bumpstops.

this is my old D1. It had 2 inch raised EFS coils and 27.5 inch procomps on the rear. as you can see from the pic, the extra length shocks made the coils dislocate a few inches which was fixed with some dislocation cones or maybe they should be called relocation cones ;)
pretty much the same as Knotty's truck. they allow heaps of rear articulation but the front was still way too hard as you can see in the pics. I sold the truck before getting the front sorted :(

Bend the top of the bracket further to get the hose to bend at 45 degrees and take the stress off the flexi hose .... or buy a longer hose

yeah, thanks guys.
If I can get that flex out of the rangie, I will be happy.
I cant see why I shouldnt, the chassis/axle configuration is pretty much identical.
The spring rates might have to be different as the body/loading is a bit different to the disco body.

Just don't go to stiff with the springs otherwise the tyre won't stuff into the guard real well:angel:

this set up was good for stuffing tyres up in the opposite guard.

Thats nice!!
Need more flex in the front though:D

so the back is easy to get good flex with spring and shocks what about the front what stops it flexing it gets bugger all and causes the body to be on a lean when flexed rather than sitting level

the front is limited by the sway bar and it is a different configuration to the rear so it is a bit harder to get as much flex from it.
I hadnt done anything to the front of mine and thats why it is still 'undeveloped' as such. You can fit things like modified shock towers, sway bar disconnects, softer coils and longer shocks and get more out of it but in the end, it is very hard to get the front to flex like the back without spending big bucks and changing the whole configuration of arms etc

Can relocation cones be placed in the front?

Can relocation cones be placed in the front?
Yes but they are a bit harder to make, because of the shock in the centre of the spring;)

Nice flex...
I am concerned how you go with bottoming out the rear shocks due to length.
Without extended bump stops, and/or raised shock mounts back there a 27.5" shock is going to bottom out over a decent bump and trash the shock or mount or both!
As for front flex, you will never get "jeep" flex from the front of a disco by design... Jeeps flex in the front, Rovers in the back.... Plus real life loading on the front will flex it more than just ramping it!
But your doing a great job...
Keep the development up!!!

i have taken the swaybar of the front, it didnt even make a differance, at the moment its all stock so i assume my shocks are stopping further droop, is it to do with the radius arms that it cant droop, will different bushes make it better

;)Tombie, I never got around to measuring the compressed length of the shock verses the compressed length of the coils to see if they matched or came close to bottoming out. My offroading is all slow work, crawling over trees/rocks/ruts so if the shock did bottom out, it would have been a slow action. Admittedly its not the best but at least they wouldnt be bottoming out at speed with alot of force on them. I didnt have any thumping or strange noises coming from them, and they never bent or broke so things couldnt have been all that bad :p
Jeepboy, lack of flex in front radius arms is probably one of the biggest reasons the front wont flex but having siad that, it is a combination of things that reduce front flex. I think its Superior Engineering or Snake make a raduis arm that has a rose joint or a ball joint in them to allow greater flex. Nice idea but you have to mortgage the kids to be able to afford them
If you took the sway bar off and it made little difference, try taking the shocks off all together (if you have somewhere VERY close to home) and see how the front flexes up then. If it goes really well, get in there are see how the coils are going, are they at their limit of travel. If they are, measure how long a shock needs to be and then go out and see if you can buy one at that length. Procomp shocks are probably the cheapest (but not in a quality sense) shock you can get in many lengths and no doubt one to suit your length.
good luck

Longer shocks will help, possibly cranked radius arms if lifted, and you can get slotted bushes for radius arms.

If anyones after long shocks talk to shane from suspensionstuff i was talking to him yesterday, he can get 27.5" procomps for about $280 a pair and if you want a bit better quality shock he's got the new Boss 12stage adjustables for $400 a pair;)
Aparently the procomps are going up in price soon..:(

Have a long list already :p

heres a couple flex pics of my freshly coil converted D2, havent gotten any good action shots yet but heres a couple backyard shots, one on the bigger tires n one on the standards, note the big tires are on a smaller step,
all its got is dobinson springs+2" n lovells shocks from trusty ol shane n works well, brake lines are still standard n sway bars etc are all in place, although the rear will be coming out shortly, and a front disconnect when i can find one :P
GL with the rangie!!!
