i need new tires the ones it came with are not good they are starting to crack and perish
my question is what size, i dont mind a guard chop, im thinking 31's its stock height, can i use the stock rims, what is the size in 16s of a 31, how will they affect gearing, i had 35's on the jeep but it was regeared, will it bugger my econnomy

I had a set of 245 x 75 x 16 BFG Mud Terrains on my D1.
It had a 50mm lift & bullbar.
The guards were not cut.

235 85 16 is 31.5" and fits under the guards on standard rims.
standard tyres were 28" and the only thing that really fouls are the rear part of the rear arch (so you need to do a camel cut) and the front radius rods on full lock may hit.
you will need to do at least a 30mm spring lift as well.

sounds good, dont mind giving the guards a trimming,
what about gearing will it struggle up hills ect
will it throw out fuel economy on a 300tdi

Tyre size comes down to where you live......
the southern boys might be able to run the larger sizes however in Queenland you can't go larger than 15mm over standard.:(
This makes the legal (max) size for a Disco and Rangie 245/70 16.
31/10/15 are not aloud in Queensland.
The law makers have been considering changing it to reflect the southerners however this has now been in the pipeline for over four years.
It can't be a bad state as the southerners are moving up here:D
Hope this helps

I of te guys from 4wdmonthly site from toowoomba Qld has received a letter from the DOT that a 4wd can go 50mm larger and that cars are 15mm larger
Have been trieng to find myself on web but main need to go and get a copy myself from the departmnt transport.

Running 285/75/16s on mine with a 2-inch spring lift and chopped guards with flexi flares. Just clears nicely.

I would say go for around the 245/75/16 size (pretty much 31"s;)) and you won't have to deal with gearing loss:)

That would be right hiding it from the real people.
I to might have to try and get that letter. I am surprised that someone would put their name to it

245/75R16's with a 2" lift and slight camel cut and your cheering! Thats what i have and love it! And i haven't noticed any economy changes and the gearing isn't to tall. But i will go to 4.11's in the future :)

Seems you have more than one gear, getting up hills isnt too much of a challenge but I have noticed it feels a little more sluggish although it is marginally quicker since I fitted the bigger boots.
The fuel economy is pretty bad anyway for a 300Tdi due to the accessories I have but I didnt notice that much difference when I fitted the tyres.
One thing to think about though, if your driving stop start traffic all the time, the taller heavier thyre will take more power (thus fuel) to get them moving.
If youre driving at Hwy speeds most of the time there will be little difference.

One thing that's not been mentioned so far is the affect on braking.
I really notice the difference when I put my 7.50/16s on my RR compared to the 235/70/16 road tyres. On road engine braking is obviously affected too.

Ive noticed bugger all difference to be honest.
They tyre type has more to do with that than the size, I went from 28" BFG At's to 31" BFG AT's.
The biggest difference that been made to my brakes as the pads.
Ive fitted Bendix 4wd pads and they are excellent when cold and even grippyer when hot until they get red hot and then the go off fairly slowly but all that takes ages.

pretty keen on the mickey t atz 4 rib but the smallest they come in is 265/75/16 which is a 32 is that to tall on standard gearing and standard brakes, would i be doing breakages with this tall or should it be right, will a guard trim have them fitting

thats a 10% change in diameter.. Not too radical but yes will be a little sluggish off the line.
The Camel TDIs ran 235-85-16 which is same height as 265-75-16...
You'll need a camel cut on back guards and it will be more than liveable...
Look at getting an upgraded IC and a retune of the pump by a decent Landy tuner.....
By the way, where are you based??? Landy owner formerly known as Jeep Boy

Where do they contact? Go take a piccy for us with the wheel turned into position....
My 265-75-16s never touched the front guard.... The hit the back one till I cut it though (on my D1)...
Although a good 'crunch' is enough to get the big wheel, cut guard, flare thing happening ;)

The drive train is built to take 750 16's so no it wont be too bad for wear BUT 265 75 16 is a bit wider and back before I fitted the 235 80 16s I fitted up a 265 75 16 (standard size on GQ patrol, nice and easy to get) but it hit the guard lip on the front when turning but it looked good.
I think without flares, 245 would be about as wide as I would go.
It starts loading wheel bearings and stuff when you start playing with offset and wide tyres.
Good luck with what ever you get.

Yeah they will do that, you can adjust the stops.
You lose a little bit of lock but not all that much:p

I went for 265/75R16 (~32") Mickey Thompsons and had to make some adjustments to the rear guards. Ended up cutting quite a bit out, the simple 45deg 'camel cut' was not enough for high articulation. Also touched on the front edge of the rear guard which had to be rolled under a bit more.
Front tyres hit the radius arms as mentioned, but easy to correct with adjustable lock stops. Turning circle goes from being fantastic to on par with most other 4x4s. (lost about 1/4 turn at steering wheel)
Speedo is obviously out by around 10% now, just in the process of procuring a replacement speedo gear. I think going down 2 teeth on the driven gear should do it.
The gearing does suffer, most noticeable when making a hill start. Takes a bit more clutch slipping to get moving especially if you have some load on or trailer etc. 4th gear gets a lot more use on the highway as well, 5th isn't enough if there is a slight hill. Still perfectly driveable, given that it was no sports car to begin with. (3.5, V8i, 5SM)
Oh, and I wrote to insurance before fitting tyres to get their blessing, so now I have in writing that I am covered. Might not be bullet proof but should help in the event of a claim. In my opinion the car is far safer with softer 265's than the hard as steel, flatspotted 205's that were fitted!
I can get some photos of the guards if that helps.
Cheers.

I run 235/85, they fit well, but with slight rubbing in the rear on articulation, just need a small trim.
Oh and we call them tyres, not tires;)

I had 4 rib ATZ Mickey T's on my old Ford Explorer, which are almost a mud tyre in fact some people call them muddies. They where great on anything other than wet tar i.e. wet round-about's & taking off on wet hills from lights - just had to learn not to give as much boot LOL :D
As far as I know 4 & 5 rib are only the ATZ's not MTZ's, just me but :D

Is there such a tyre size?
I think the biggest is 235/70 with no mods.
245/75 is the common up size (which I have). You need to trim the rear guard and adjust steering stops.

235/70 is the stock size. (29").
225/75 is fractionally bigger (29.3").
I've never looked into 245's as I need the width clearance for chains. A mate had 245/75R16's on his bighorn.
I have 215/85R16's (30.3") coming. I like being different.
Also remember a lift does not create clearance.

Depends what you call "bigger" too. Width or height...but I digress.
I have 245/75 bighorns and have chains. I did a trial fit and seemed fine. Where do you think the issue is here?
I like your idea of higher tyres. TDI ratios suffer a bit tho.

I'm concerned about rear tyre clearance on full compression and losing steering lock.
I have a lot of wheel sets and at the moment a pair of 255/65R16's is on the back (Michelin XPC's trying to wear them out and it's just not happening).
These would be a bit smaller in width than 245's with chains and on the front they rub the radius arms where 225/75's and 235/70's with chains don't.
In the rear they get very close on the outer and inner corners at full articulation.
I intend to run the 215/85's as snow/mud tyres. They should be here next week. I'm sticking to 225/75 A/T's for normal usage. I agonised over 235/85 a lot and decided that if conditions get really bad (snow/ice) I needed to be able to fit chains over all my tyres.
I'm okay for torque to spin them.

I admit I have adjusted my steering stops with 245's and car parks are not pleasant, but bearable. If I had to adjust them any further, I'd be going over tight roundabouts out of necessity. :D
