View Full Version : Check your boots (redback!)

At Xmas I noticed my blunnies had some web inside. Hadn't worn the boots for a year I think since we had our things in storage when moving house. Was about to slip them on, thought I better give them a bang on the floor first....and then....bloody hell! This redback fell out with a rear end the size of a malteezer / jaffa (you get the idea). It was very docile and slow so I used it as an education the kids before I sent it to spider hell...
Anyway, bit spooky as I am sure he would have sent me to hospital pretty quick had I slipped the boot on...
keep an eye out for that dense web they spin....

Absolutely, especially at this time of year when the grasses are all dying out and crunchy - it superloads your boots not to mention picking half a paddock out of your socks.
Good practice also for kiddies that the Redbacks can be a bit marginal for if bitten.

Sure beats a Green Tree Frog in the boot. They just feel squishy and make a funny noise:wacko:

Youre right NM, I always bang them... this time was just a bit odd after having them in storage...
Arent Redbacks deadly or fatal if bitten?

Don't you wear sock protectors? :o
No, its a good idea though. I usually wear jeans which cover the tops of my boots or shorts and boots.

There was a report in the news paper yesterday about a little boy who got bit by a funnelweb hiding in his gumboot. He survived and got medical attention but it was very painfull for the little fella.
It seems they are out and about early this year up in NSW. Thankfully we don't get them down here in Melbourne but I do get a few redbacks round my place. I've shown a few to my 7 year old when I've found them and she knows not to touch them and to come get me.
Cheers

Ah...ok...I thought someone was asking Baz to check his boots ;). On a more serious note.....I always check my boots first before putting on as they are outside. I haven't seen many if any redbacks around here on the coast...but when I lived at the boomba, the car shed was full of them. Used to get geared up in my Arnie camo's, armed with a can of mortein in each, utter the famous words "asta la vista" and start spraying until their bodies lay twisting and squirming on the ground . However the big huntsmans around here...more than welcome. Even though it kinda freaks the kids around having these huge spiders running around inside...they do a good job on the insects that can get in,

utter the famous words "asta la vista"
What actually does that mean? Vista I thought meant views or something, La I think is the feminine "the"... asta...
Ahhhh wiki!
It's "Hasta la vista baby", It's Spanish and the H is silent...It means "See you later baby".
Hmmm, so why does an Austrian speak spanish in an English speaking American movie?:lol2:

You should get a pair to wear with shorts...it'll save a lot of seed picking from socks :D

The flys here have come to an understanding also. If they annoy the dog enough for her to bark at them..... then they all get the Mortein. If they leave the dog alone.... they live.
