A few pics of my 1971 Series IIa 109 RHD. I'm new to the rover forum and looking for pointers on tracing the history of the vehicle. Is the Queensland plate the real deal? My understanding is there were about 3,000 vehicles of this series made. Is that remotely true? Any feedback is much appreciated.

Enjoy,

Welcome mate - that roo bar looks like one I used to own for olmate; I left it at a mates place in Darwin (for scrap) about 5 or 6 yrs ago. It was a home made job that was pretty good on the early series veh.

This photo was taken on a week hunting trip along the Daly River NT. We were out chasing pigs and fishing.

Given the colour - I would say it is an ex Navy landie. That colour was not standard in Australian landies - however it was the standard Navy colour - also the safari roof.

Gday and welcome to oz landroverin'!!

Its definately a qld plate, re the history, I reckon it maybe worth a 'trip' to REMLR (thats on this forum, register of ex military landrovers (aussie/nz etc)

someone may be able to give you more details on your vehicle....or even with a chassis no, if its recorded (navy less than army but..) may give you service details etc... if nothing else there is the chance of photos of similar ones in service.....

by the way ---it looks great...

cheers

I believe the safari roof was standard on all Series station wagons (I have never seen one without), so not specific to the navy.

The number plate is a Queensland one of the type introduced about 1955 and replaced only a few years ago.

According to Taylor, total Normal Control Series 2a production was 343,298, not including military lightweight vehicles. Of these about 48,000 were 109 station wagons. So I do not know where the figure of 3,000 came from - the smallest number variant I can find is 811 for the North American six cylinder station wagon, and 4,949 for the six cylinder station wagon excluding NA.

One possibility is that the number of could be that low if you only included a particular variant with the headlights in the mudguards (change about 1969).

Liveyawp, can you post up your engine number and chassis number and we can look it up for you. Most definately a Queensland Number plate,........as you probably know already everything good comes from Queensland..:D New South Wales try to beat us at football (Rugby League) but they still in their infancy:o:angel::wasntme:

Ain't that truth Rob.....watch out I think I hear NM's footsteps....:D

Nice truck indeed. I have seen a restored 2a that same light grey/blueish colour, mid grey I think it is...navy i think is a touch darker

Navy landies of the 70s were a sky blue colour - not grey at all.

G'day LIVEYAWP :)

That is indeed a Queelsland Rego plate about 1969-70 series pre the "P" series the "O" Series ran from the Mid 60's until the early 70's so that would be possibly it's original Number, the front brush bar looks like something that was available through "Annand & Thompson P/Ltd" in Brisbane, they were Rover & Landrover agents and importers, so it could well be a fully imported vehicle, the front "Landrover Badge" may have "Rover Ltd Birmingham" instead of "Rover Australia" stamped into it, this vehicle may have been exported to USA by somebody that was touring or Posted to USA and left on their return, the US plates may give some idea as to when it was first regoed in the States. Hope that is of some help:)
