Panda just gave me a call asking for suggestions to get the series going again.
Problem started after running out of fuel in the main, switched over to reserve but the engine just stopped. She has fuel again now in the main, has checked for spark at the plugs & confirmed fuel is getting to the carby. Any suggestions to what the problems are? She's on her mobile & able to check this thread for any answers.

Series 3 is carby version??
When a car runs out of petrol ... it can drag and dump water & dregs into the carby that was in the petrol tank
If you have a fuel filter // water & dregs can block it
First step
Take air cleaner off and see if the internal of carby is wet with fuel ... This will let you know if the fuel is getting up there ... Also will let you know if it is flooding //
Get a thimble full of "fresh" fuel and tip it down the carby ... Try to start motor
If it starts but wont run .... repeat the "Add fuel step" a couple more times
(NOTE: If the car won't start after adding fuel ... DO NOT repeat process)
If it won't run without adding fuel /// the carby needs to be cleaned of water? ..... or filters need replacing
To identify spark problems // take a spark lead off a place on a metal area and crank motor to see if it arks across (blue spark)

hows she checking fuels getting to the carby..
it might be flooded, it might have a clogged main jet.

Was only priding myself on the reliability of the old girl. Driving into Macarthur Square - she suddenly stopped. Thought she'd run out of fuel. Rang the NRMA. They informed me they were very busy & would take at least an hour to come out. Also, did I have any cash on me. Err, no. I have EFTPOS or credit card. Not good enough. They would have to tow me to the nearest garage (when they eventually arrive, that is), so I could pay for the fuel.
Sod that ... Rang Tony who came out. Put fuel in. Still no go. Left it for 10 minutes or so, in case it was flooded. Still no go. Ended up towing it home. No doubt it'll sit in the shed with lots of "umms" and "arrrs".
Bloody hell. Wanted to go away the long weekend! :(
Many thanks to Pete for posting for me.

Fuels getting to the carby & has spark. Tried to rest it for a while, as well as dragging her & tried clutch starting ... all to no avail. :(

Yea, she's a carby version.
Now in the process of pulling the carby off. Lesson learned. Last time I'm going to run the tank dry!
Will also check the fuel filters, though I replaced them not long ago.

Plenty of fuel coming from the carby, but the doova lackeys .... can't think what they're called, oh that's right, the spark plugs are dry as a bone.

Sounds like what Mike 90 rr suggested with crap from the bottom of the tank fouling the system.
Good luck & glad you got home safely...

Update: Apparently the needle assemble has "dropped off". Whatever that means. Tony reckons he's never seen it happen before.
Blacknight - isn't it about time you moved to Sydney so you can fix my Series III! :)

That's 2 of us who broke down today :(.
I sat in gridlock on the M5 for around 30min before my fuel vapourised & left me stranded .
I was able to push it into the shade under Beaconsfield St & it cooled down enough after 15 min or so to restart. Little Scouse wasn't impressed either.
Glad to hear you're sorted though Panda. That Tony's a great bloke - I just hope he doesn't laugh at you when you break down like he does with me ;).

Sorry to hear to broke down too!:( Not much fun! How come the fuel vapourised? At least you got it going again. Poor Scouse Junior definitely wouldn't have been impressed! Especially in the heat!
Tony's still in the shed trying to repair it. Apparently some bits fell off the carby (what's the chance of that happening?) He's tried another carby, but that doesn't work either. :(

can you identify the carby, have you got one of those nasty solex jobbies a zenith or some other aftermarket thing?
if its a zenith your laughing, its just a hose out with carby clean, check the float height and re-assemble the only thing that stops the zenith is when its not getting fuel, the float sinks, or it fills up with crap and blocks the ports.
if the floats sinking (which would be flooding the engine like you wont believe) its just a case of solder it back up and away she goes again.

It's a Zenith... Tony's swapped it & taking it for a run (mind you, he hasn't come back yet).
Problem was something fell off, that was apparently the culprit. So when are you coming down for some mechanicing teaching? :)

you got something to fall off of a zenith? what did you do, drive off the top floor of a carpark?
your aware that as far as carbies go the zenith is essentially a brick of aluminium with some holes in it....
I might swing through on my way back from wagga, head over to the courrier pages for more info

HI Dave,
That well might be, but the "brick of aluminium" has a dirty grate big screw mixture adjustment thinggie on the bottom of the float bowl or did first time I ever seen one drop out....that was the cause of the failure to proceed yesterday, all bake together now running OK just need to do another fine tune (at least I hope its OK SWMBO has just gone out in it)

if the mixture screw fell out it should have kept running with enough right boot in it and bleed fuel everywhere....
the screw falling out is not common but not unheard of, when youve refitted it a dab of loctite 222 or a replacement spring is the go.
