I have a series three that is rusty and tired. what i want to do is do a swap using a discovery. In short, roll the old rust out and roll in something not so rusty with a better suspension. Here is the problem no one does this near me (not a jeep or chevy or ford POS) i have looked for books and have found nothing. i have the book on hybrids and it is close to worthless in terms of how to do. has anyone done this in this forum and if so what do i have to do? What are the unseen problems? I can get a good dicovery for nothing, that is the reason of the choice in vehicle. I can weld and do sheet metal work. i need help .So HELP:(:(:(:( Please.
thanks for any ideas........and yes i know it will be a pain in the ass and i should by a ferrari because it will be cheaper.....i know.:)
Thoughts?

Welcome to AULRO
I wish I could help. That's a project I'd love to do.
I couldn't help but notice the username - I used to use Tallgrass Technologies tape backup/hard drive units many, many years ago. (I still have stuff on tape but I can't find a compatible drive I can use to get the data back. :( )
All the best

lots of fabrication work to make the bodies cross mount, and you will have to drop some inches out of the tub of the series to make it fit over a disco chassis.
extensive firewall mods foot plate and tunnel mods as well as seat box.
brake master and clutches and the like will need work but its not insurmountable and you will run into some hassles routing the steering gear due to the series running a relay box under the front and using a pushrod from the steering box which is mounted on a panel support member..
fun and games with the radiator mount up and the usual routine is to put a defender/county radiator bulkhead and bonnet in to make room for the v8/tdi but the tdi can be made to work with the standard bulhead positioning with some reworking of the fan and shroud, namely get rid of them and fit a thermofan.
Good luck if you want to retain the aircon, your best bet here is to naff it and fit a converted york type reciprocating compressor that becomes your aircompressor.
that should get you started.

Here is an easier way of doing the conversion. Also, use a Defender steering column, Master cylinder etc into it.

thanks... i figured there would be metal work which is a ok. i think i need pics so i can visual it. i guess i am surprised with all the documented web pages on everything from harnessing hippie love rays ect. to converting a corvette into a ferrari i thought this would have been common.

If you're after coils etc hav you considered using a Defender or County chassis instead? I'm sure it'll be a hell of a lot easier and quicker and most of the problems and compromises will be solved.

if i was anywhere else in the world yes but here a discovery or range rover are cheap and anything defender is worth a ton. a crapped out one is over 30,000. same year, perfect ranger rover or disco is 1,500. that is the reasoning for donor vehicles.

AndrewA 4x4 Is Born - Exclusive Offers From Mark Evans (http://www.a4x4isborn.com/) you may get annoyed with some of his lame jokes but is is worth a look at the vids. Don't know if the DVD will play on NTSC monitors and equipment in the US, so you should check before purchase.

I'm a tea man myself - except when I'm in the US, I drink coffee. If you tried what passes for tea there, so would anyone else!

Drip coffee just doesn't do it for me, luckly the melting pot has provided that Italian influence and you can get an espresso.
tallgrass,
We drink our tea hot, iced tea is not the norm.

as for coffee i am an espresso fan, i also like the french press. cold brew coffee is amazing when done right and easy. As for tea i like sun brewed iced tea, what is called thai iced tea. though i have to agree, having lived in England for a while and having visited Australia several times, your our tea sucks in comparison.

I guess you're not well read in American history! You know the mayflower and Plymouth Rock etc. The colonies in the North East of the Nth American continent were mainly from England. The whole American War of Independence (or rebellion depending of your perspective) was over being an English colony and paying taxes to the English crown. It was a rejection of the taxation on tea that was the stimulus for the Boston Tea party. The cry of the colonies was no taxation without representation. When England would not negotiate the issue and sent the Military instead, then came the Colonial Army, George Washington and the rest is history.
From all that we can surmise the American preference against tea.
We won't get into the South and Central American history because that get's all tangled up with the Spanish, Portuguese and French.

tallgrass,
Been told a few times that the idea of drinking hot tea in a warm climate is all about getting the persperation going to increase the cooling effect as the persperation evaporates from your skin.
I suspect like Mike that it has more to do with tradition and a need to drink to prevent dehydration. I don't know if it was a case of boiling the locally collected water and masking the flavour of dead animals in the water with the tea.
For whatever reason we do drink it and I suspect that the low turn over of tea on the shop shelves in the North American continent means that tea is not as fresh and therfore doesn't taste as good over there.

i was not aware of the ausie slang of turkish coffee and hash. i was not speaking of hash.:( sorryNo it's not slang for hashish, however hashish is commonly added to Turkish coffee. In fact there was a Turkish restaurant in Cleveland Street Sydney, that made traditional Turkish cuisine which included making Turkish coffee they way they had in the old country. It was very popular for a time, that was until the Police Drug Squad raided the joint and arrested the owner. He claimed he didn't know it was illegal to use hashish in coffee.
