Oil Leak from my 2.25 motor

G'day,

My 2.25 motor has a slight leak comming down on the rear side of the engine block i have traced it to a cover plate which has 3 bolts holding it in place. I dont know much as i am new to the 2.25 motors.

Is there meant to be a gasket there? it looks like it has perished i noticed the bolts were a bit loose too. I replaced the sump gasket and oil filter fresh oil evertyhing else seems ok. Any recomendations on what oil to use? Castrol GTX 20-50 or is Penrite a bit better.

would appreciate anyones advice on how to ammend the problem.

That covers the back of the camshaft. The steel (or sometimes cast alloy) cover is held with the three bolts, one of which is partly obstructed by the flywheel housing, but it can be done. There's a cork gasket in there, about 1.8mm thick. Just remember to fit the cork gasket dry (no glue or grease) as this will make the gasket slide and distort.

precoat that gasket in hylomar #3 or loctite #3 (loctite bought it off of the hylomar mob) also known as aviation non hardening gasketing compound #3.

leave it sit on a clean tin plate for about an hour and then install.

thanks for the pic, i couldnt find any diagrams in my manual. that is very useful.
ok so Loctite 3# is the go.
Is this a common thing with these cover plates? in terms of oil leaks?

yes common if you put them in dry, they soak up the oil and wick it out, thermal cycling doesnt help...
