Well we thought it would be good to wake up at 3:00AM and check out the inauguration.

Couldn't believe the sea of people - amazing. More people turned up than there are people in the whole of Sth Aust

Speeches were good apart from some mad poet lady - not sure what drugs she was on.

After all the words spoken, let's see if anything changes.....

Thats what I would like to know.

WGAF If America has a new, black president. I'm just trying to hang on to the tiny threads of Australian life before we officially become a US state.

Why?

Pretty historic event. Never imagined a country like the US could elect a bloke with a middle name of Hussein as president.

I can understand that - but why not watch the "replay" on the ABC news tonight - at 7.00pm?

Ahhh - good question. Dunno.

The same as watching a Grand Prix live on the other side of the world vs watching 2 minutes of highlights on the news I suppose.

I just watched a replay. The speech was brilliant and had depth. We dont get speeches like that here, I dont think they are the kind of thing I want to hear every day but for occasions like this I dont have a problem.

I want to comment on the aussie coverage and the useless tv hosts the station decided to use. They commented on obamas kids new disney DVD's, the party they are having, how cold they were, the ski jacket she (host) was wearing, the advert allowing them to put on a heated electric blanket, all trying to crack jokes along the way.

Mate what a bunch of *******.

I dont take anything to seriously but I dont want hosts introducing personal points of info to the screen, I dont give a damn about how cold they are other than perhaps a brief weather report.

Yeah, I watched it too.

Very motivational. I think US politics is important as it has a lot of influence on world politics.

A historic event. IMHO

So WGAF.................Me! (A couple of billion others around the world too;))

I find Australians and the media strange - we had all major TV stations showing hours of footage of the appointment of a foreign leader. What is our footage of a new Australian Prime Minister being appointed by the Governor General? - about a two minute clip on the evening news.

Somtehing wrong there and shows that maybe Australian society still values and respects overseas leadership more than our own.

On a number of levels Obama's appointment is of far greater significance than Rudd's.

Besides, the Americans do know how to put on a good show!

Maybe to the Americans - but not to the average Australian.

Maybe to the Americans - but not to the average Australian.

That's like saying what happens to Wall Street or the US Auto industry doesn't affect the average Australian.

Not really interested in watching the political crap after what this stupid stupid country (the US) has done to the rest of the worlds financial and business markets with their irresponsible and cavalier attitude.
Ask the 10,000 plus people in the mining industry plus more in construction and retail plus any flow on if they are interested in US politics that have caused this recession.
Millions spent on a stupid inaugaration, where is Obamas real commitment to channeling this money back into an area it can be really used rather than a freak show.
:mad::mad::twisted:
But hey if it interests you then that is fine also.

Yeah I'm with spuddy! Big event.
Perhaps when an Aboriginal person is named Australian PM we may have more than 2 minutes on the 7 o'clock news. (Note: deliberately said when - "Yes, you can!")

While I'm not interested in the new "president of the free world", I'd love to know how many of those who voted actually know his policies, or if they just voted because he's black.

All I keep hearing in the media is what a great orator he is, how smart he is, that's all fine, but what's he going to actaully do?

moose
24th January 2009, 09:10 AM
Well...he's closing Guantanamo Bay Jail
Any idea what policies he was elected on though? I know this is aus and we don't need to know, but it's been in the news for the last 18 months, and besides everyone seems to be so pleased.

I'm not trying to be smart, I just think if it were truly not a race issue, he would have been elected on the topics/policies of the day, and on his past record. Everyone keeps saying "he's a black president, yay!" Which is fine enough, but surely the shouting should have been "he's going to close guntanamo, yay!"

To me it's not about the specifics or policies. It's about having a change from the red-neck-bible-belt-corporate driven America we have seen for the last decade.

We now see a man that has:

engaged the population.
spoken about inclusiveness
restored pride.
fulfilled dreams
spoken of peace.
spoken about respect
spoken of the future.

We wont see the result of the "pudding" yet but at least he has started baking one!

Why should this influence us? What happens in the USA affects us all - it's just a fact of the world we live in.

Just my $0.02;)

Unfortunately you have probably hit the nail on the head, not many people have cared before about the American president and to be honest with you I don't believe anyone really cares now accept for the fact that he is black. It just goes to show how racist the world really is, personally I don't care as long as he doesn't **** up.
Because such a big deal has been made about his race (which everyone downplays the fact that he is half white) everyone expects that he is going to be shot, not if but when and all the media outlets want there own coverage.

I hate to sound so cynical and would love to believe in pixie dust and all things that smell nice but I just cant:thumbsdown:

So we may as well hang on for the ride and see what happens:p
