Gday,
My name is Chris i'm from Melb, Victoria. I'm here to share my resto project on my 1955 Series 1 SWB. It was purchased in Feb 06 from a fella who owned it for 40 years. Its first 10 years of life was used by a company "Goldfields Diamond Drilling" around the Ballarat - Bendigo area in Victoria.
I got plenty of spares with the vehicle when it was purchased items such as; doors, bonnet, gearbox shafts & gears, wheel studs & nuts, o/s brake drums & shoes, pto, + a container full of BSF & Whitworth nuts and bolts.
Here begins a Long Haul Restoration project which is currently in progress today 3 years later. Hope you enjoy the post, i have lots of pics and will update it on a daily basis for all to read.
cheers Chris.

hi Wayne, yep thats a front mounted winch you see there, as Picked up by Diana in a previous post a while back on the Yahoo Trans Tasman series 1Register, she mentioned that particular winch is made from an aeroplane starter motor with reduction gears. It was big and heavy i didnt decide to keep it.
i rekon i should have tried to winch it up a tree like in that film "The Gods Must Be Crazy" hehehehe:D

Good luck with the restoration. Lots of knowledgeable people and plenty of info here. Keep the pictures coming.
Mine has a holden motor (202) too - although I'm looking for a 2 litre to return it to original.

Hi there
Many thanks for the pictures - I noticed the air vents on the sides of the doors (these were used on the later series vehicles - from memory)
Ae you going to keep the holden engine - or convert it back to Land rover.......either way its a tidy looking rig.
It also must have been a common after market conversion of the time - my Series One Fire Engine also has a remote brake booster fitted in the same place.
All the best

those vents on the doors bring more air into the cab its not a bad idea, as these series landys dont have aircon.
i decided to keep the 186 because the previous owner didnt keep the origional motor.
what did the 86" have 2.0 litre motors? For my next project i will source an origional engine for my 56 model swb. its nice to leave some landys with the holdens in them as this was common in the 70's i thought it would make a nice example at car & 4x4 shows.
i moved the brake booster behind the gearbox under the passenger middle seat near the pto cover plate, makes the engine bay a bit tidier and easier to bleed the brakes as its at the same level as the master cylinder.
i have a pdf, of the johnsons holden conversion booklet. how can i upload a file like a pdf? its worth looking at. maybe both our landys were converted by the same company back in the day?
cheers

Just press the little "paper clip" logo and add as an attachment.
Your 86 would have come with the later 2 litre "spread bore". (Same as my 107")
Your right, there was a lot of holden powered land rovers. (Probably still is!) You can always convert it later if you feel that way inclined.
Keep those pictures coming!

thanks mate,
hahaha, skinned my knuckles quite a bit on this Landy. I had to cut one of the bulkhead bolts off and i was cutting it with a thin disc on the angle grinder the bolt head flung off the disc hit the bulkhead and landed on me scorching hot. got me between my collar & my neck. by the time i got it off it had burnt me ouch! it left a scar but im ok i try to be as safe when working but sometimes things just happen i guess!

I'got a front cut quarter chassi from a series 2. someone in the LROCV gave it to me for free but i did them a favour and pick up a hard top roof for a 2a that he bought from someone in Frankston, as this person lived in mt.Macedon, VIC and the roof needed to be picked up from Frankston a bit far for the fella, so we swapped parts half way at our next cub meeting. i thought why not, sounds like a fair deal to me!
I also welded in bracing to stop the chassi from warping when i re weld the new member in place and removed them at a later stage. Also repaired the battery tray & front end pieces with new tubings for the bumper bolts.
I capped the ends with and opening and close it off with a rubber grommet
and at a later stage spray the inside of the chassi with SW2 oil simmilar to fish oil but without that fowl smell.
I did these repairs during the summer period of 2006-07, and i tell ya, i was working in 30 degree heat outside, welding too. which lost me a few kilos!;)

Ignore the copper brake pipes, they have been changed with bundy tubing. Personally i dont have a problem with copper brake pipes as long as they are rated. I still dont understand how they are approved and dissaproved in various states. My mechanic told me they can burst i said they were rated he says no, no they wont pass. i said i went to the historic car show in Flemington i saw a dozen English and European cars with copper brake pipes, he had no awnser for me when i mentioned it. I could never get a straight awnser i changed them because it will be more difficult to replace once the vehicle was together i didnt want any problems when it comes to rego. So just note to check with your local mechaninc or authoroties before you purchase copper brakes from the UK.
i could of sprayed them silver, who would know?

I stripped all the cappings and pieces which were origionally galved, cleaned them up with a wire brush removed any paint and sent them off to the galvers in Preston, Vic. (Industrial Galvanisers) cost me $200 to do the lot as they base their price on volume, weight. So if you can pair up with someone to do your galving as one lot will save you a bit of money. I was extremely happy with the result, the windscreen warped a bit but was an easy fix. Anything with threads will have to be re tapped as the galv is quite thick.
Also just note that if you have areas with slight rust or where the metal is thin or have a few pin holes, the galv might burn through and make a slighly larger hole. it happened on my door frames on the inside corner where the bailey channel is placed. its ok though its not on the outside.

I agree about the copper brake pipes. I have used them for years but found it impossible to buy the stuff anymore, so I had to fork out a fortune for a bender and double flaring tool, just so I can have rust-prone pipes on the car

Really impressed with you work.
I'm also pleased that you were able to get all your galvo parts done without to much hassle. I've been told a few horror stories about having this lighter material re galvanised, pieces getting lost/damaged etc.
I won't be mucking around trying to restore the old galvo now:)
Can't wait to see the finished product.....

Hi Ben,
At first i wanted the Chassi Galved i spoke to many Galvanising companies but they didnt want to be responsible if something went wrong, eg. chassi warping! They didnt want their huge galv baths contaminated with all the crap from inside the chassi as they can collect mud and rust from the inside out.
I ended up making a tool and spray penetrol / fish oil on the inside of the chassi through the front rails all the way through to the back.
i had over 90 pieces to be galved, small items had to be tied to lengths of wire in groups of 5 as these small pieces would be spun after dipping & so nothing will go missing either.
all items had to be numbered and labelled. then the galvers would stamp and no. a plate which would be attached to each group of parts. To ensure all the parts stay together.
Everything turned out well the day i picked up the parts i actually sat in the carpark at the galvers and made sure everything was there before i left the place. Touchwood all went well having knowing what the dangers were with galvanising.
cheers,
chris

I too had considered the getting the chassis galvo'd but what the galvanisers say makes sense.
Good tips about tying smaller parts together and labeling them. All advise has been noted.

I had my chassis galavanised; it didn't distort at all.
The galvaniser told me to drill drain holes in every box section, from memory I made them 12mm, which is useful for hosing them out later as well. It did make the chassis much heavier and of course left the pattern of the zinc showing beneath the paint.
Would I do it again? Probably not, now that I have discovered Penetrol but I would modify any chassis to have good drain holes and I would cover the ones not needed on the sides of the chassis to slow up ingress of muck.
Good advice Chris! Ringing them before starting the job is always a good idea,
Cheers Charlie

I assume you mean Lanolin?
Lanolin is not made from wool, but is a skin secretion of sheep.
When you pat a sheep and your hands feel waxy - thats Lanolin. ;)
They separate it from wool when turning it into textiles.

This is interesting i have no idea about these things, it is great to know.:)

Yes i found markings also on the front LHS guard but couldnt see much of it. Were there any writing on the LHS side of the tub? near the bottom of the door? This is interesting i have no idea about these things, it is great to know.:)
<snip>The markings on the LHS front mudguard were merely a smaller version to the regular Land-Rover logo on the rear.
I am not familiar with any signwriting on the sides of the tub that relates to A&T, this may be something about the private company/owner or some sort of government agency.
If it were the RHS side (drivers side), it could be the owner and weight information required on all commercial vehicles of the time.

G'day,
Over the Easter weekend i managed to put in some good hours on my 55 Series 1. I have mostly completed the Wiring Loom. Once all the Ancillaries were connected i hooked up the battery to test everything, only problem were the indicators. It had a faulty indicator stalk from a County the plastic crappy ones so i had taken the one from my 68GS with a new flasher can too. The good old cast zinc one works just a treat. Pitty they dont make things like they used to in the old day. So im pretty happy with the outcome. ill post some pics soon.
cheers.

I am interested to see that you managed to get the holden in with little/no modification to the chassis and body.
When I put a 161 in an 86 20 years ago, I had to cut out part of the front X member and move the lot a couple of inches forward and move the radiator panel forward as well.
Then having just installed the engine I hit a hidden ditch and put the engine through the radiator:mad:.
You vehicle is looking good - great work.

yeah tight fit alright, i have heard stories about the motor shifting foward (Holden Motors) and the mechanical fan fouling on the radiator. I will be removing the mechanical fan for the electric one in the picture. I will also put in what the series 2A's have, that rod from the gearbox to the bellhousing Xmember. its got rubber grommets at each end. Its to minimise movement of the eng & gbox all together.

G'Day,
well i've been a busy lad trying to keep my job and balancing work on the 55'
as its almost complete. I bled the brakes last weekend and all went well.
Today my Radiator was ready to pick up i had a custom brass/ copper 4 core
made by Aussie Desert Cooler, and will install it over the long weekend. ill attach pics of that installation next week.
I had some 6mm rubber left over when i made mud flaps for my rangie. So i cut up 2 pieces and made up the bonnett buffers for the spare tyre.i used Loctite 5min epoxy glue to join the 2 pieces and once set i cleaned up these pieces on the linisher.

hi Mick.
To get the old rivets out i used a centre punch on the solid head of the rivet, then used a 4mm drill bit and drilled through the top of the head untill it snapped off. Then used a hammer & punch to get the remainding piece out.
Another way of removing rivets, i used my die grinder with a 2" abrasive disc attachment very coarse and ground the head off untill it was flat and then punched it out. i used this mainly because i found it easier to do as i wasnt worried if i knocked a bit of the Galv off as i was intending to re galv everything.
the new rivets i put in using an attachment in my air hammer and a bucking bar on the head of the rivet to keep its shape.
i purchased all my rivets and tooling from Big Flat Rivets Co. in USA.
Big Flats Rivet Co. - Authentic rivets for vintage cars. (http://www.bigflatsrivet.com/)
i sent them an origional rivet and they matched one close enough.
also practice heaps on a scrap piece of alluminum sheet as it took me a while to set up the correct air pressure and get the hang of how to install solid rivets as it was the first time for me.

I've read your thread from start to finish. Fantastic. I brought home an original rolling chassis of a 1956 86" last Saturday and have started cleaning dirt off to ascertain the state of it. Phew...it's starting to look like a bigger job than it did in the sellers shed.
At least the original 2L is still there, and seemingly works, or did two months ago. Now missing a carb and radiator.
Your photos and tips have given me encouragement, although I'm a long journey away from where you are at now. Getting the engine started and the wheels rolling will be a major achievement.
Keep it up, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished photo's. Out of interest is there anywhere to buy pre fabricated bell housing crossmembers and chassis out riggers pre fashioned, I've never welded, and am going to have to teach myself.

hi Ian, welcome to the Forum & thanks for your reply.
Firstly congrats on you new toy and i hope you have fun with it. I had to learn everything myself welding, wiring, painting etc. and the Landy was perfect for this. Buy or borrow tools that you need and just give it a go and practice on scrap pieces before attempting on your finished workpiece. Be patient and use safety methods at all times.
As Lost Landy has mentioned you already have access to his spare chassi its a start. Thats probably the best thing, is to find a second chassi that you can salvage parts off as you need them. I made up my own gearbox cross member and got a front cross member off another chassi and made repairs to the bottom of the bell housing cross member too. this is a good option as new off the shelf parts arent readily available like in the UK.
If you get stuck with something ask us on the Forum, thats the best thing about it, love it, such a great resource to have access to!
I will be firing the engine up this weekend for the first time ill post a vid of it next week. .................Big Kev's Excited!

Good to see that you're still in their fighting.
Does your 48 Land Rover have a rubber cased battery with exposed lead connections between the cells and Dunlop T28 Trak Grip tyres? If it doesn't have both those items then by your definition it's not a Land Rover.
Will you now tell me that a Mack truck with a Cummins Diesel is not a Mack truck?
What about a human being with 2 hip replacements and 2 knee replacements and a heart valve replacement? Are they no longer a human being.
What about a 48 Land Rover with an Aeroparts capstan winch, is it still a Land Rover? We do know that the capstan winches didn't start arriving as an option until the 1950's.
Sorry Ian, I have to disagree with you once again on this issue. Hybrid Land Rovers have been a fact of life from at least 1950 and they deserve a place in the historic record.

Oh & what about Mr Land Rover fitting Rolls Royce engines in the 80" B40s I belive. Each vehicle is different, I think its great to see another series 1 brought back to life.

hello sorry to say but I disagree with you Diana I see tyres and batterys as consumable items and do not see them affecting the originality of the vehicle.
What about a 48 Land Rover with an Aeroparts capstan winch, is it still a Land Rover? We do know that the capstan winches didn't start arriving as an option until the 1950's.
This was an accessory option and could of been fitted later to a 1948 land rover.
Sorry Diana I have to disagree with you on this issue. Holden Motors are just plain rubblish and have destroyed far to many front cross members for my liking....
Shonky
27th June 2009, 12:23 PM
Len - read Diana's post again. She was making the same point you made, that these things don't stop an LR from being an LR. The intent seems to have gone over your head. :)
I'm sure Diana prefers a LR motor over a Holden one like any of us but the fact is, a HUGE number of LRs were converted to holden motors during their life and so there is nothing wrong with restoring it that way. Sure - you won't be restoring it back to "as it came out of factory" but what does that matter? There is no set of rules as to what time period you have to restore your vehicle back to. If you want to restore it back to it's mid-life state then go for it... Holden motor, roofracks, radial tyres and all!
series1buff
27th June 2009, 03:55 PM
The real negative about a Holden motor conversion these days is the strict RTA laws ( in VIC ) . If the car is unregistered ,you have to go through the labourious and expensive process of getting a engineers certificate in order to qualify . In the past, the RTA would accept a Holden mod., if you could provide proof of previous registration with the Holden in situ or a old engineers cert. But I've been told , currently, they require a new certificate , they won't accept an older certificate...
For a stock Series 1 drivetrain..in the case of a red motor, you are doubling the bhp and increasing the torque curve markedly as well - compared to the original motor . Fine for relaxed everyday driving ... but off road , broken axles and so on may be problematic.

Mike
Actually, for most Holden motors, the biggest problem is gearing - they do not rev as high as the Rover motors and are less likely to tolerate it for long. For anything other thaan local poking about you really need higher gearing, such as an overdrive or higher ratio diffs. The increased power and torque is less of a problem - after all, with the exception of the rear diff in lwbs, it stood up to the six.
And if used offroad, steep slopes are likely to cause carburetter and engine lubrication problems. Despite these drawbacks, Holden engines have, as Diana say, a long and often successful history in Landrovers. They were mostly fitted as the cheapest solution to a Rover engine in need of overhaul, with the bonus of easier to find and cheaper parts and a bit more power, certainly a lot more compared to the clapped out engine they replaced.

g'day,
Thanks for your replys and opinions, always an interesting read.
Well here's a vid of my Landy on first start up.
I know it has 2 extra cylinders but its part of our LR history here,
and is why i have chosen to leave it that way. I nearly put a rover 3.5 V8 motor in it LoL:p........
i think that would of ticked Ian off......bigtime!:o
As for my next resto ive got the 1950 which will be restored to its origional condition
as it came with the matching no.'s eng & gbox! split rims, etc!
anyways enjoy the Vid!
Cheers,
Chris;)

Have fun Syd.

with the whole restoring it back to factory or with a holden motor.this is my view i do prefer it with the LR motor how ever a restored seies 1 with a holden motor is better then one not restored at all:)

Top work, Chris - the low gloss paintwork looks just right.
2 questions -
what tyres are those? and
how are you planning to attach seatbelts?
I have seen seatbelt conversions in a couple of magazine articles - one attached direct to the top of the tub capping behind the seats and one with an inertia reel on the tub, feeding through an arm mounted to bring the strap to shoulder height. What do the rules say?
Thanks for the update and vid

Hey 'D'
thanks, yeah the paint job worked out well. I used 215 Machinery Enamel (Satin) over a 2Pak Primer undercoat. Gloss is not my thing, personal choice i guess. but Gloss is easier to clean and maintain!
these tyres are Dunlop Road Trak Majors. these are 7.50s you can get them in 7.00's & 6.50's too. they dont make them anymore but you can find them at wreckers, trading post or FleaBay!
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/07/207.jpg
I'm going to attach the seat belts same as on my Series2a FFR. A 3 point belt one end bolted to rear tub top rail behind seat. other end bolted to the lower part of tub with a 8mm 80x80mm steel plate under the floor. and the conncetor piece with the red button will be mounted on lower left waist side!
probably confused yas all! hahaha! diagram below!
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/07/208.jpg
as far as the rules i already know ill have trouble if i was going full rego because of my Holden engine, it would have to have an Engineers Certificate and a Rollcage which the top part of the seat belt to be attached!
im going on Club rego so should be ok. When i restore my 1950 80", its pretty much stock standard and when i get it on full rego, im not planing on having seatbelts or indicators at all!:eek::eek:
if anyone has any suggestions as to seatbelts please comment.

Hi Wayne,
yeah thanks mate!
i used to have a vb commodore with a 179 motor was a good engine but the 186 is the best motor. was the 202 a 186 block bored out? reason for heating problems caused by thiner cylinder lining?

today i got some 1.5mm thick rubber in white and modified a font in ms word print it out and made a few changes in black pen then made more photo copies for the ones id use to cut out.
i cut out the photo copy spray glue the back and stick it on the rubber sheet. i did this so the paper doesnt move while im trying to cut it with a snap knife.
it worked well so tomorrow ill get some 6mm rubber for the mud flaps and stick the letters at the bottom of both sides. I did this way because i couldnt find any on ebay, etc! the font is not exact but best i could do, better than nothing i guess!
feel free to save the Land Lover typo attached pic and use it for what ever you want.

If the adjustment is not loose, there are two ways the points can close.
1. Failure to put a smear of grease on the cam will result in quite rapid wear of the rubbing block (not much though, you don't want it on the points)
2. The distributor is worn allowing sideways movement on the cam. Unfortunately this is the most likely in a distributor this old. It is repairable, but needs a fair bit of expertise. You can probably find someone who will recondition it, but it won't be cheap.

over the last weekend i managed to fit washer jets for the wipers & mounted them on the spare wheel carrier to one of the wheel clamp bolts.
tidied up the switch panel and attached a piece of zinc plate which i labelled using a letter punch set. that part of the orig panel that covers the wiper motor was a bit damaged so i covered it with this labelled plate. Also re fit the steering damper with a new damper from a NissanPatrol.
heres some photo's of the Landy its lookin good, very happy so far...!

Hi jk92,
I'm unsure of the cylinder head torque settings you after the origional 2L motor torque? i got a General Motors 6cylinder in my s1. maybe some others on the forum may be able to help but i can have a look in my S1 manual for you.
Yes, the panel on the right side of the steering is a panel that covers my wiper motor & also use it as a switch panel. switches for wipers, washers, thermo fan, fan fuse, and electric fuel pump for my dual tanks.

G'day,
over last week i fabricated the centre cap for the steering wheel.
origionally the Landy had the horn dip switch fitted and now that i had fitted an NOS S2A Army steering Column it has a solid shaft. I had refurbished that centre cap but will now use it for my 1950 LR.
So i cut some extruded styrofoam and shaped it to fit in the centre bit of the steering wheel. I then coated it with Epoxy Resin and some fine Matt fibre glass sheet. once cured i gave it a light sand and coat with body filler then another sand + primer then sand 800 wet and dry and top coat in acryllic black. Just a note that Polyester Resin will melt styrofoam.

You're a pretty handy guy...I'm remembering the L/R lettering in white on the mudguards... and now the fabricated centre disc...looks great.
The good steering wheel I have, has a metal centre disk, which is pretty flat and a sort of silver colour, I say "sort of" as it's so scratched, it's hard to tell. Would it have been black originally?
Did you have to fill any cracks on the bakalite wheel? I have a few minor cracks on my good one, and I'll be filling them at some point.

G'day Ian,
thanks mate, yep the centre disc would be black, i have seen some that had a wrinkly or rough black surface. not sure if that is paint aging or is the actual way its meant to be. but i know for sure they were painted black.
as for my steering wheel, yep i had cracks so what i did was widen the cracks up with my Dremel, and then fill the cracks with 5min epoxy then sand over and apply body filler and sand to a finish. then finished it off in 2pak black.
hahaha yeah this ones definitley on the home run, well the next hobby is the 1950 that i recently got from South West Victorian farming region.

Fair enough! I know the feeling! :o
I seem to remember noting that you had a Tex-Magnalite type blinker switch. This being the case, there is an integral light on the body that should flash when you activate the indicators. ;)
The choke warning light I am told should come on once the engine is up to temp, to remind you to push the choke back in. I am not 100% sure though because Ambrose' choke light comes on when the choke is out regardless of engine temp!

thanks, not much left just got to figure out why i cant get it into 4x4, low ratio works fine red knob, but 4x4 lever yellow knob i push it down but doesnt stay down. accelerator sticks a bit probably spring tension, and small vibration after 60km could be propshaft un balanced. these are easy fixes. the yellow lever is my main concern at the moment, other than these issues its very much complete. :D:D:D

hi, hope you are all well. gees i havent posted on my thread since 12th of Oct. time flies:o 3 weeks till Christmas:D:D:D whats on your wish list???
i was ill for a couple of weeks i had Landroveritus (should post this word on Wikipedia), LoL nah just a chest infection but im ok!
now back to the Landy, where was i at. thats right the day i got back home with the landy from the resto day, i noticed my rhs fuel tank had decided to take a Leak............ so back to the workshop and out comes the tank found the 1 inch crack on the seam line at the top rear left side. so i filled the tank with water and silver soldered that area. then bought PPC brand tank sealer in a kit with marine clean and metal ready.
so i started by Degreasing the tank with marine clean let it sit for 30min bit of a scrub, rinse that out then once dried poured in metal ready let it sit for 30 min drain it out and rinse with water then let it dry for 2hrs or so with the help of a hair dryer. while i was at it i did the other tank too.
once both tanks dried, i masked all areas like the drain hole, pick up line hole and sender unit hole. so out of the 1 litre tank sealer i poured in 500mls in both tanks sloshed them around to cover all internal areas of the tank. 1 litre easily can do 100 litre tank no probs. i also brushed some sealer on the outside of the tank where i done the silver solder repair.
once done i put a bucket under the drain plug and undone it to drain any access sealer, then pured it back into the tin to have half left put the lid back on it and stored away. the instruction say to leave it open and let it dry out! can explode hasnt happend yet. i used it for sealing other tanks. mower and a morocycle tank too might as well use it caus it bloody cost like $80 bucks mate!
while the tanks were drying (allow to dry approx 96hrs) i cleaned up my sender units and pickup lines. yesterday i installed the tanks back on the Landy and install sender and pickup lines. i also put a filter at the end of the pickup line, i insert this through the drain plug. these are mopar parts 5/16 in tank pickup line filters. that should stop any big chunks from blocking up the fuel lines.
anyways next week ill top the tanks up with fuel and should be as good as gold! then next week i can go for roadworthy and get the thing Club Rego......! sweet all done..............!:D:D:D:cool:;) not always done as there will be other things to iron out over time........!
some pics attached.
Cheers,
Chris;)

thanks Grockle i had a look at the 4x4 linkage lever, it was on an angle for starters i undone the locknut and turned that rod around so the lever sits vertical now. after adjusting i push the yellow knob down its stays down, and when i push the high low transfer lever back and forth it pops back up.
now just have to take it for a test drive and see if 4x4 engages. thanks for that i never new that shaft piece was adjustable!

Hello Chris,
I shouldn't imagine you will have a problem - your preparation would seem first class. :) I don't know what these inspections are like in Victoria, but here in God's country, we take our Series vehicles to "sympathetic" inspectors who understand the "special" characteristics of old Land Rovers. ;)
Maybe someone down there might point you in that direction - or do you have to go to the Government department to get it done in Vic?

hope you all had an enjoyable and safe Easter weekend. I went for a drive in the S1 today to the Dandenongs Sky High all went well the Landy didnt miss a beat!
i did enjoy the Queue of Cars building up behind us and then i thought i'd let them pass then about 5mins down the road there was a random breath test. the police stopped most of the vehicles that passed us i was the last their slip lane was full the officer waved me on so we continued LoL.........!

gees i havent been on the Series 1 Enthusiasts sector for a while since i have been camping in the REMLR shed. So bit of an update! the Landy is going well only addition to the LR is an oil cooler for the eng which is soon to be fitted. im enjoying it now, i take it out for a drive every now and then. so much fun to drive compared to my spongy 83 Rangie aka couch on wheels. LoL
a bit of a story and a close call i had a heart stomping moment during the past easter break. I decided to take the Landy out for a drive on the Sunday i had my brother & my 4yr old nephew with me, we were driving along when a car beside us decided to vere / drift towards us i hit the brakes and this car went into my lane the same car did it a few times and we could see the driver was looking for a street / house, but driving with her head turned and would veer off the road couldnt keep it straight, unbelievable! thankfully an accident was avoided. i only had just got my Landy on the Road!
anyways here's some pics of my Landy throught the year. to start off with a before and after!
also, my Landy is going to be published in the "Land Rover Owner International" Magazine.
in the readers vehicles section. I will inform you all when it is published.
cheers. Chris:cool:

thanks digger, yeah the D shackles worked well on the back of the tow truck a few times. blinkers are still the 50mm ones (for Roadworthy), i goto switch them back to the Harley ones. looks better.
yeah the wiper reversed set up seems to work quite well. i put it on that side to try and hide it behind my switch panel.
the head light screens are still on it, i bought them from the UK made in stainless steel they come with three little brackets each side which mount to the main rim screws then the mesh screens pop into place and i secured them by tying fuses wire through every bracket. ill take a macro shot for evryone to see.
the name sounds good too. was gona call it TheFox after the previous owers surname maybe i can call it "Marilyn Fox" sounds good!

hi Ian, thanks mate. The only major hick up i had was the brakes, honestly i lost hair over it LoL i had a new pair of wheel cylinders i bought from Ebay big mistake! they leaked, i pulled them off re surfaced them re asembled with rubber greased em, re bled and still leaked. then the brake shoes got soaked and started to melt! yes melt. made an absolute mess, then the landy got stuck in reverse the brakes would lock up while reversing. i had out of shape shoes to the drums. my fault because i should of had more sense & grab the old wheel cylinders re sleeve them in stainless with new pistons & PBR seal kit. and have the drums machined and the origional shoes re lined to match each drum. 4 goes later i finally got the brakes working A1, the thing stops better than my 83 Rangie!
what problems did you have?

Well done Chris, this story was like a good book.
I didn't stop until the whole 21 pages were looked at.
Kinda wish I still had my 86", I traded it in on a six cyl 109 flat tray near Mareeba NthQld, mid 1973.
The 86" at the time had a very sick clutch from all the oil the 179 threw out!
I wonder if anyone on here ended up with it, it was only one around with a chrome grill !
Cheers Arthur

G'day,
i Bought my rivets from Big Flat Rivets Co in the USA they matched the solid rivets from an origional one that i had. you will neck a bucking bar and the former for your air hammer gun. if you have access to a metal lathe you can make the tooling up your self. Big Flat Rivet Co also sell the tooling.
Website
Big Flats Rivet Co. - Authentic rivets for vintage cars. (http://www.bigflatsrivet.com/)
you will need to purchase Solid Alloy Rivets
Aluminum Rivets - for vintage automobile. (http://www.bigflatsrivet.com/aluminum_rivets.html)
hope this is helpful.
regards,
Chris:cool:
