A GPS holding bracket in the windscreen in Qld will cost you $ 170.00 fine.
Yes you are reading correct, the pen pushers allow bringing to the country the GPS units with suction cups to hold the GPS mounting brackets on the windscreen but the holding system is illegal.
I was today at the Police station to confirm this rule and they say that any object above the dash which interfere with the windscreen or view is illegal.
The only solution is mounting the GPS on the dash and hope that the inbuilt antenna will have reception or purchasing a separated antenna if your unit have the option.

So how does that sit with this section of the Aust Road regs

299 Television receivers and visual display units in motor vehicles
(1) A driver must not drive a motor vehicle that has a television receiver or visual display unit in or on the vehicle operating while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, if any part of the image on the screen:
(a) is visible to the driver from the normal driving position; or
(b) is likely to distract another driver.

Offence provision.
Note Motor vehicle and park are defined in the dictionary, and vehicle is
defined in rule 15.
(2) This rule does not apply to the driver if:
(a) the driver is driving a bus and the visual display unit is, or displays, a destination sign or other bus sign; or
(b) the visual display unit is, or is part of, a driver’s aid; or
(c) the driver or vehicle is exempt from this rule under another law of this jurisdiction.

Examples of driver’s aids
1 Closed-circuit television security cameras.
2 Dispatch systems.
3 Navigational or intelligent highway and vehicle system equipment.
4 Rearview screens.
5 Ticket-issuing machines.
6 Vehicle monitoring devices.Or has Qld gone off on a tangent.:eek:

It would only be illegal if it obscures the drivers vision of the road. If it inside the profile of the bonnet it is OK. There is a legal definition of the position of the driver's eyes. XX mm from, and xx mm from there, and xx mm above this etc. You would win this one before a magistrate.

Once again from Qld Transport booklet. It is taken from the paragraph pertaining to W@#ker bonnet scoops, but I believe it is the standard used for all drivers field of view issues.

For the purposes of this
requirement, the driver’s ‘eye’ position can be taken
as being a point 730mm above and 270mm forward
of the junction of the seat cushion and seat back with
the seat in its lowest and rearmost position.

I saw a Police car with a GPS on the windscreen in Ipswich the other day. Wonder if it was owned by the company or privately.

I have mine on the dash of the falcon at the bottom in the middle out of the way . But i can understand why the police may get the hump as i see people with them almost right infront of them in the middle of the windscreen and i have thought how the hell do you see around that . And i think they are dangerous when they are like that

This is not what the police said. If it is attached to the windscreen and above the dash.......Bingo $ 170.00

Go to see the magistrate if you like, but will be time lost plus cost :(

I was a front passenger in an NRMA accident investigator's company vehicle and the view directly in front of me was obscured by a suction-capped navigaton unit attached to the windscreen. It certainly obscured the driver's view to the left of centre. The driver was also using the keypad whilst driving, as traffic lights went green before he completed his entry. The driver subsequently failed to slow down from 70kph for a 40kph school zone until almost at the end of the zone (slammed on the brakes) because he didn't see the sign at the start, only the end.

Hear, hear. I fought a speeding ticket a few years ago, cops contradicted each other in court and the barrister proved mathematically they were lying. Bad luck cop the fine + cost (indirect tax and quotas)

It might be technically the rule but has anyone actually been prosecuted for it ?

My GPS is mounted on the windscreen but right down on the top of the dash - in my opinion does not impair my vision of the road ahead at all - and I'm driving in QLD in a couple of months. We'll see.

I started investigating this issue because a person that I know was stopped by the police last night during his trip from Rocky to Hervey Bay.
The police give him a caution note and say that next time will be $ 170.00 fine

had this one already and won it.

by the very letter of the current rules (not counting the fact that as fozzy's a 1970 vehicle Im largely exempt to a lot of the regs)

the rego sticker is also illegal on the windshield of fozzy, Im not allowed to put it on the side window as the door tops are removable (decided not to point out that so is the windshield) not only that but by the very letter of the law according to one vehicle inspector so is the metal strip that runs up the center of fozzys windshield.

By the letter of the law I can not legally display as required by law the registration sticker of my vehicle.

other things that are illegal include
promostickers. (including the next service due stickers)
wipers that dont park below the "glare edge" of the windshield
Etags (bet they wont ping you on it tho)
Rear vision mirrors that adhere to the glass of the windshield where the adhesion pad is visable past the edge mirror
rear vision mirrors that are not adhered to the glass but hang down in such a manner that the support of the mirror can obscure the view.
fluffy dice
anything on the dash including dash mats (this is also covered under airbag stuff) that might stand proud of the tested level of the dash....

however, by the intent of the rule

so long as what youve got doesnt interfere with the normal line of sight your good.

IF that driver was involved in an accident which resulted in a death then the driver would be charged with causing death by dangerous driving (under UK law) which can result in a 14 year jail term. This includes adjusting any electronic equipment in a vehicle whilst on the move.

If the GPS was half decent it would have warned him of the school zone regardless of the time

I had better tell my wife to remove her disabled sticker from the front screen when driving.

What about bonnet-mounted spare wheels?

If I can stay in one place long enough. I've been on here (off & on) for a couple of years, as Ian, Ian again and now V8Ian. It all depends on www access. Presently at Amberley, so good deduction.

I have just finished mounting mine above the vent on the left of the console the suction cup kept letting go pulled the bottom section of the mount and drilled and tapped a hole through the plastic above the vent drilled through two sections of plastic to make it more solid.

I use an external antenna mounted on top of the snorkel, this permits me to mount the GPS up near the front cabin light. I find this good as it keeps the windscreen clear and draws less attention to the unit from outside. The external antenna is also useful when trekking in dense forest, where GPS signal is reduced.

I think you would find that any enforcement of that infringement would be very circumstantial. If a driver wasn't aware that the GPS in front of their noggin was causing a problem then they probably deserve to be navigated into the side of a train.
Perhaps if they bought back vehicles that actually had to be driven we would all be better off.
