Had to take the front crossmember off to remove the sump (oil pump bolt check - it did have threadlock...2002 model) and superficially it looked fine. Have a look at the chunks of rust that came off where the crossmember bolts to the chassis. Worth a check for some it seems the water sits between the two and the rustworms just love it!

Yep, did exactly the same job on my 2002 D2 a couple of weeks ago and found much the same thing on the crossmembers as you (took off the rear crossmember too).
I cleaned up the crossmember and chassis-mating sides with some rust-off, however stuck for time I smeared axle grease in between the two plates before bolting back on to try to keep moisture out.
I'm not sure if grease will increase the propensity for movement of the crossmember to chassis mounting or if it will help with future rusting however it is clear that some flex and movement must be taking place down there for the rust to begin in the first place, hence I didn't bother painting with primer/top coat ?!
p.s. there was no sign of lock-tite on my oil-pump-bolt; however its sure glued in there now :)

I sprayed with a zinc rich primer that ran out on me, then cheapo carpaint in a can (ran out of options) then put a flat piece of 4mm rubber between the two on the assumption that if I squeezed them together really tight then less water would get in!:) Will check the rear next weekend - first job is the front s/abs rubbers they look like they are worn at the bottom... then replace a window motor... good news is that I fitted the dog guard this morning :D
