Hi all
The big nut that holds the drop arm to the bottom of the 3 bolt steering box in the county seems to have a habit of coming loose every now and then:mad:
It has a locking tab but that still doesn't seem to stop it, any ideas on how to keep it done up nice and tight or is it just another one of those rover things:D??

the correct torque setting is RFT.....

the technical setting is 170Nm or 125ftlb.

If the nut keeps coming loose you have an expanded drop arm or worn mounting splines.

i used a nut with nylon thread and that stopped it from coming loose all the time

OMG...
Just found the Large nut loose and the locking tab not folded over. The nut had wound down about 1cm.

Who did (or rather did not do) that?

Dunno - just under the rangie while replacing the wiring to the oil pressure/temp senders and had a bit of a fiddle while I was under there - (of the steering etc :o), checked out a new leak in the steering spotted the loose nut. :(

I once had a look at a used Rangie 2 door .

The guy had 15inch wheels and big flotation tyres, and told me in passing that he never drove it over 80K because it was too unstable.

I thought that that was a bit strange and stuck my head under the front bumper to see a drop arm about half off and JUST enganging the splines.

The guy told me that he had recently fitted a new seal.

BOTH the ears of the lock tab were bent downwards over the nut!!!!

Luckily I had my big socket in the tool kit and was able to do it up, and then bend the lock tabs in the correct manner.

The guy was unfazed by all this, and didn't seem to understand he was a poofteenth from disaster.
Regard Philip A
