Toey,
UHF talks to UHF and AM (27mHz) talks to AM. Not practical to talk (in our scheme of things) to talk AM to UHF or vice versa.
You will find the major proportion of people are on UHF, the biggest problem with AM will be finding someone to talk to.
There are (or were) some dual band UHF&AM radios around.

as bushie said, sorry to say just hold of and wait around and save don't buy somthing that you can't use that is a waist and could have bought half a UHF if there is a club around you, some people upgrade so keep your ear to the ground and could pick one up. my policiy is if i can't afford it I save for longer to buy what I want, buy once buy right and you will enjoy it more.:D:D

Dont even think about looking at old 27 meg radios if you dont yet have a UHF. Save your money and get a decent name brand UHF and a decent antenna, which can be very inexpensive if you dont mind drilling a hole in your roof.

more of who's gunna hear me for a S.O.S call
I wouldn't be relying on UHF for this either.

UHF is the main these days.
Bide your time and a cheap one will come up.
I have both.
For S.O.S. you want UHF for within 5km range or mobile if there's coverage followed by sat phone and HF or an epirb.

You can always do what im currently doing, buy a $30 UHF hand held (you will always need it) and save up for a in-car UHF.
