They are available
ARB coopers Plains have some in their showroom.
They are very expensive, not road legal, very soft (the comp one anyway) etc.
But, they are awesome and I really wanted a set, but from memory the 35inch dia, 15" rim ones I looked at were over 500$ each (the comp ones). Also limited sizes avaialable
I am not sure about the road legality of the non comp one, but the compound is harder.

I thought the non comp ones were to replace, or compliment the MT's ?

When I was in ARB last time, (it was a while ago) they mentioned the harder compound version coming out, but that may well have been the new MT. (and they were confused)

they are called KM2's and they are to replace the mt's.......I'm not talking about the comp ones....and yes the sidewall on them are very much stiffer than the old MT

The pic below is the BFG MT km that we all know and love. Its a regular streetable mud pattern tyre

That tyre is being gradually replaced by the BFG MT km2 which is also a streetable mud pattern tyre. The tread pattern has been inspired by the BFG Krawler which is a comp tyre.

The tyre that the BFG MT km2 was based on is the BFG Krawler kx as pictured below. This is a full comp tyre and performs like a full comp tyre. The BFG MT km2 is a mud tyre and performs like a mud tyre.

Out of interest, the BFG MT km2 has been available in Aus for while now, but only the first release of specialty sizings are landed, and the main size for LR's in the BFG MT km2 is the 315/75-16 which is the 35" tyre. The other more consumer sizings will be released at a later date.

Slunnie,
That tyre looks like it will wear quickly. The original MT has solid lugs as differs to the km2.
Has anyone trialed these for wear? Also the km2 looks to me at least, as though it may shed lugs, (not as if the original does not), the grooves in the lugs may allow or enhance tearing. My thoughts only.
Regards.

It'll be interesting to see. BFG have a good reputation for longevity. the side blocks are typically solid. I've only seen new ones, but the outer lugs where they grab look like they have a lot of support and I'm guessing they would cut on the lug rather than tear. I think the ones that look like they would be most prone to tearing are the alternate centre lugs with the horizontal groove, but I reckon they would be fine especially as its in the centre of the tyre. Those cuts allow the tyre to better mould around rocks etc. All guessing anyway, I doubt there are many worn out sets in aus yet.

I am on my third set of muddies and like the look of the km2. I have plenty of life in my tyres at the moment so I guess I won't be a trend setter.

Interesting, slunnie, that photo you posted of the KM2 almost looks like it's going back towards a bartread pattern, but maybe it's just he way i'm looking at it :lol2:

Absolutely, the bar tread IMHO is a really good compromise pattern. I tend to think that the more perpendicular the tread blocks are, then the more forward drive that the tyre with a given void ratio will provide and some really good examples of this are the Mickey Thompson Bias Claw and the Interco Bogger which are some of the best "drive" producing tyres out there. The BFG MT km2 has a rock crawling heritage from the Krawler (and to differetiate it is also a radial amongst bias tyres) and BFG to their credit have tried to maintain its capability. Most other manufacturers of MT's have gone the other way producing MT tyres that have more angled tread blocks, are quieter and smoother - to cater for the touring crowd that spend a lot of time offroad, but not necessarily demanding outright offroad performance.

the KM's are supposed to be alot quieter thats what thats why the blocks are set the way they are.....I think in the talk we had if I remember rightly also said that they get rid of water easier too

The change in void space with the way the blocks have been set will have a lot to do with that. Smaller blocks to evaculate, smaller void ratio for quietening, more edge for drive and more cuts for moulding.
