Right guys, time to bring all your expertise and accumulated knowledge to bear. This is the description for the sale of a
Range Rover 4.6 HSE 1996

for sale in NZ. Bro in law purchased and all looks good. The mentioned starting prob has not reared its head but just wondering if the combined wisdom of the RR collective might have a suggestion or two on what a likley cause may be?

Just out of curiosity, whats the high/low cdl engagement for a RR of this type. Any other potential pitfalls or things to watch out for?

All feedback welcomed.

Air conditioning
Alloy wheels
Central locking
Driver airbag
Passenger airbag
Power steering
Sunroof
Towbar
NZ New
5 seater
4 almost new tyres
Runs really, really well when it starts but has a starting issue
(Sometimes turns over & over and doesn't want to start). Only happens occasionally - we haven't had time to get it looked at and as we have 6 cars this hasn't been problem enough for us to get it resolved. Once warmed up it doesn't do this again) so you can drive places without worrying about it happening again.
We've adjusted the sale price of this vehicle to reflect this.
AC works but blower isn't going
Air suspension is great
The Kilometres are honest - vehicle has been well maintained mechanically (we checked this out when we purchased) and looked at a lot of these vehicles
Other than that this vehicle runs mint especially on a long trip.
Uses no oil or water
A lot of vehicle for the money

Some paint fade on roof
There are a couple of dings on the body, and the rear bumper has had a knock on (prior to us purchasing)
The leather on the drivers seat is cracked, also in the pictures.
Tow rating is 3500kgs.
Head lining in vehicle is sagging (I've been told $450 to have this done)

We've carted some hay recently, sorry but this comes free! Cheap price - you get to vacuum it out.

We purchased for the wife/kids to drive locally - so no off-roading or towing.
People we purchased off used it for the wife/kids also so no off-roading there either.

Warrant now expired (4th Jan) - buyer to sort this out (and registration) as we simply don't have time. Vehicle sailed through last warrant no worries.

Hmm

Sounds like they don't really want to sell the car.

Personally, I would pay no more than 5k for it and than wreck it.
It sounds like bob the builder used to service it.

Sorry mate, these cars need kitten gloves and only good ones with very good service history need apply for new owners.
When they go they are brilliant but when they fail they are your worst night mare.

Hmm

Sense of humour!!!

Mis- understood the post.

What's that got to do with sense of humour, I am still laughing myself.

Could not even understand what you were trying to ask.

Sorry mate just trying to help.

Good on him for a bargain and hope it serves him well.

Can't wait to go to NZ.

Bigguy, your reply is the first line. LoveMyRangie's (LMR) reply is next. Srry for the confusion.

I was asking if anyone had encountered the hard to start prob and any thoughts on this.
Also, what the hi/low range or cdl engagement options are in this model and any other (specific) pitfalls to watch out for.

thnx

Ive had hard to start problems on my RRC, as you described ... and this was related to the positive terminal post on the firewall being internally rusty

The signs for this was dull headlights + other dull electrical complaints

The P38 problems could be EFI related, to the "temp sensor" on the fuel rail or just bad connections around that area

Tell him to try a cold start with the following method
1 ... Turn key to on ... wait 3 seconds ... start car for 1/2 to 1 second only ... stop
2 ... Turn key off / then turn key back to on position ... wait 3 seconds ... start car

See if that improves on how it starts

sounds like a bargain, but for that price, have a few grand in the kitty just in case. The starting issue may be a cracked fuel line, which lets a bit of air in when it is standing for a while, then when it goes to start, there is no fuel in the line. It could also be the pump etc, but i would be first looking for fuel stains on the outside of the lines.

If you only paid 3k for it, spend another grand or so and give it a major major service ( oils, filters, shocks, airbags, air compressor seal, thermostat, radiator and brake line flush etc etc), and you will have a car you can trust.

Also find someone with a test book and get them to plug it in and see what faults have been logged (these only show up when you look for them). You might catch a problem before it happens.

You say that the blower in the ac is not going, is this the drivers, passengers or both?

This is good stuff guys, keep it coming.

You gotta admit the subscription for this site at $27 is well worth when you consider the value of the info you get!.

Centre diff lock is by means of a viscous coupling unit.

When front to back shaft speed slips enough, the viscous kicks in and locks it automatically.

Mixed opinions on how effective this system is.

Other than that there is high and low range through the H gate automatic.
