D1 Alternator

im not sure if i have this in the right section, but my battery light lit up when i started my car this morning for my way to work the tacho was also showing 0 rpm, on my way home, it was also lit up and the tacho too was showing nothing, i got home with no problems, however when i went to go out, the battery was dead. im just wondering (my is a 300tdi) if a 3.9V8 petrol alternator and the 300tdi alternator are interchangeable?

and if not, how hard would it be to rebuild an alternator? i've replaced brushes before on other cars i've owned in the past with no dramas, so that sort of thing isnt a hard job for me

New alternator will cost about $300 if it comes down to that.

300 Tdi and V8 alternator are not interchangeable:(

it is a left hand right hand issue on the brackets.
