Many of you who read this thread will think "what a dunce" but there may be some who it helps.
For some time now I have had a real problem with downloads freezing and slow access. I have not been able to view any Utube videos as they always stopped downloading midway.
I blamed Optusnet and they have had issues from time to time.
Last night I decided to spend some time on it.
I have a cheapo Compaq laptop running Vista Home basic, which I run through a Belkin Router and Speedstream modem to ADSL2 Optusnet , through Optusnet exchange equipment.
Anyway, I did a speed check via ZD Net and found my speed was 300KBPS!!!!
OK then I rebooted the modem and confirmed the correct settings for a router were installed. The reboot gave me 3000KBPS, which was ahem quite an improvement.
So then tried to download a Utube link from this forum. Stopped midway.
connected the modem direct to the computer and it downloaded. HMMMM.
So went to the Belkin site and had a look. Didn't really give any clues on the site but gave instructions on how to access the router settings by typing 192.168.2.1 with no www or http.
Went in and saw that firewall was enabled. Disabled firewall.
Downloaded complete U tube video for the first time.
Apparently the combination of Trend Micro Internet Security Pro firewall and the router firewall was causing the problem. Vista Firewall has been disabled all along and the Trend protection is on default.
Hope this helps some other old duffer like me.

fairly realistic for adsl,

i'd recheck that, not a very realistic fgure on any broadband here in aus.

Better than I often get on Optusnet cable. 1 bps isn't uncommon.
Yep, one bit per second!

Maybe try turning on the router firewall and turning off the Trend firewall. Two reasons: First router firewall connects from initial contact with the internet and will protect all computers attached, as well as the router, second that the Trend firewall might slow your computer down a bit.

Have you checked if there's any firmware updates for your router? I have an I.T. background and used to have a tendency to apply updates, especially if there's a list of fixes, however it can sometimes bite you in the bum - after applying later firmware versions to mine, apps like MSN and P2P download programs regularly drop out.
So if you're tempted to update your firmware be sure to make a backup of the existing version.

Try lowering the MTU down to 1400 on the computers/router see if that makes a difference

PhillipA , there is some very good advice here.
Enable the Router Firewall and disable Trend Micro Firewall , see if you can still download youtube "Vids"

So are you saying that if I disable my Norton 360 firewall and keep the firewall enabled on my D Link router it should give me the same level of security and possibly better performance.

I think he suggested turning off Trend firewall as a way to troubleshoot what is actually causing the problem, not a long term solution.

Norton is a resource hungry bit of software and would be slowing your system down as is....

I had a look on the internet and it appears that the Belkin firewall is sufficient on its own to prevent unauthorised access to the network as all traffic has to negotiate it.
Whirlpool has a question in its forum and a couple of recommendations on settings.
I ticked the setting "Discard Ping to WAN interface" as instructed, although my Belkin has a different sentence it is the same thing.
I couldn't find a "SPI and amt DOS firewall protection" to tick.
So I have disabled my Trend and windows firewalls on both computers and enabled the Belkin firewall.
