Hi if there are any equine vets on here that might not mind answering a question for me, could you please drop me a pm.......:)

It's about the feeding requirements of a laminitic horse:).....I just want to verify something before I make some changes

Thanks

the pony is actually recovering from it........he is doing ok but I have some real concerns about the amount he is getting fed, and because of the problems with the laminitis i want to get my thoughts about the situation confirmed before going ahead and changing things:)

Our founder prone fat pony only gets grass hay during early summer and spring - very limited access to fresh grass. We also feed out founder Guard which is a low grade antibiotic. This seems to have done the trick. Apparently it's a protein related issue, the antibiotic kills a gut bacteria that digests the protein, or something like that.

p.s its very risky changing diets suddenly as that can trigger an episode or even liver failure. At least thats what our vet said.

its fructun (sugars) in grass and high carbohydrate foods or being feed to much grain. also can be caused by being insulin resistant that can cause it even injury or chemical imbalance....cushins can also show symptoms.

I know about diet change etc, I do however need a vets opinion on the feeding regime of this pony due to the circumstances of which we have him.....I don't believe the pony is getting enough to eat, but I want to confirm some figures before I change his diet.

And for the record NO diet of a horse should be changed suddenly let alone a laminitic horse..... a lot of people often think my horse has laminitis I shouldn't feed it...they couldn't be further from the truth by suddenly not feeding a horse in such a state can send the digestive system into a kind of shock. making the situation worse....and increasing the likely hood of colic and even a torsion

Spot on, in my uneducated opinion.
