View Full Version : Air conditioning paying too much?

I just got a pressure test done on the 93 V8 Discovery and they found the front seal of the compressor leaking.
I was told I need to replace the compressor ($550) receiver drier ($60) and Regas ($176) the labour charge is an additional $414 but they will discount that to $264 as I am an RACWA member so all up $1050 is this reasonable?
As I have a history of being over charged thought I’d ask before I go ahead.
They give a 90 day warranty.

If it's only a 90 day warranty, it sounds like they're supplying a 2nd hand compressor.
Sounds exxy (and dodgy) to me.
I would have thought replacing the front seal would be a cheaper option (if it's do-able).

Is this price structure from the East Perth folks??

That is their standard warranty for all repairs. At $550 I would hope it was new might have to get a price on that part myself.
They said it couldn't be repaired. A few people have said the compressor has to be replaced I don't mind replacing it but it has to be a new one.

You could pick up another compressor from a Rover wrecker somewhere.Shouldnt be to much second hand.I just sold one off my wrecked 93 for $80;) Sounds all a little bit expensive to me.

I've rung 6 different companies they are all around the same in fact the one I have is slightly cheaper due to the RAC discount.
A new compressor is $500 +GST everywhere I've asked. Also a lot of places say they don't have them at all.
I suppose I could get a second hand one but I'm hesitant to do that.

Don't do it, it's not worth the aggro. The PAG oil used in compressors are extremely hygroscopic, so if it hasn't been capped and purged with dry nitrogen immediately after disconnection it will probably be rusty internally. ;)
The refrigerant cost seems high too, as I'm guessing there's only 550-750 grams or so in the system and R134A retails at around $45/kg or so.

Not sure about the rest, but the regas price is normal, for Perth anyway.
I'm currently looking into a pressure test and regas as well, and everywhere is about $175 some up to $200.

The pressure test was $75 a lot of other places wanted a lot more to check it. I don't want to go second hand I'd rather pay for a new one.
But it is all on hold until I get the noisy start issue fixed.
