My discovery sometimes revs up at start-up is that normal? It seems to be worse on cold early morning starts.
It will rev right up then after about a minute drop back down and idle normally.
P.S The neighbour has complained about the rev-ving;
particularly the 4am work trip.:spudniksnore::spudnikcurse:

How many revs? They will have a fast idle on cold start.

Wouldn't be because the A/C is still on at startup???

What motor do you have in your Disco? If its the V8 it could be as simple as cleaning the stepper motor with some WD 40 and then putting it back in.About a 10 min job.My one was doing the same and a simple clean helped it alot.Didnt rev as high on start up.

5000rpm at start-up!!.I would fix it while you still have bearings left.

At those rev's I'm assuming its a V8:confused:
Tdi at 5000rpm would be:eek:

So what should I do? Mechanics have said nothing to worry about... (where have I heard that before?)
it was "supposed" to be like a new car after the $7000 new heads etc what else is wrong?

There is no way the stepper will allow it to go to 5000RPM. About 1500 is more likely.
Are you sure about 5000RPM? have you ever heard an engine at 5000RPM just standing still? It's scary.
There must be a leak in the inlet or the accelerator cable is overtightened, or something else to do with the throttle assembly. Take it back.

Yes it sounds like someone with their foot on the floor of a race car. Normally it doesn’t go that high it still revs up to the 30-40 mark (x100).
It only lasts for short time then drops down; it happens sporadically mainly early mornings.
Something to do with the cold starts maybe? Once it is warm it doesn’t generally do it.
The worst thing is it won't do it in front of the mechanic so I look insane when it starts just fine.

Just talking to a friend in the US who has had this problem with a charger...
Does a discovery have a air flow meter or air mass meter?
Just to clarify it doesn't ever drive at 5000rpm it only revs when I first start it within say 20 seconds it begins to drop and it will rest between 10-2000rpm it drives not much higher; and all my readings are just from what is on the dash. Although it is so very loud so i think the dash is right.
One other thing in any other car if I put my foot on the floor and reved it up to 5000rpm it would shudder why doesn't the disco even shake a little? Not that I'm complaining about it; is just odd to me?

That idle speed after it has settled is a bit too high. IIRC it should be between 700-800 RPM for the V8. I would be taking it back to the mechanic that said nothing to be worried about!!

This little habit will KILL THE MOTOR real quick

I would NOT go back to this particular mechanic ... as there is no guarantee that they "will do the right thing" .. and it will all be done under protest or just plain ignorance
My advise is to use the new mechanic that Disco2tow is now talking to

Yes you have a problem.
Take the vehicle to one of the recommended specialist in WA, I think that people have pointed these out. A specialist will know the sort of things that can cause this issue. Don't expect them to clean out the stepper or something if it will only be a temporary measure. Warranty means that the mechanic is more likely to go for a new part that will not give troubles within the warranty period.

I've just twigged ... You have had the heads fixed ... There is a high probability that you have vacuum leaks from the intake manifold side of things .... this means that the motor could be running lean
Personally ... I would stop driving it :(
Get it looked at ASAP :(

I'm getting it checked hopefully soon....waiting for a call back.
I'm not driving it at all. Luckily the hilux although it might be like driving a tonka truck about as smooth too is much more dependable.
I long for the day that I can enjoy owning the landrover rather than being stressed out all the time & spending all of my free time/money repairing it.
At the moment it is one ongoing nightmare.:vampire:

I also had this issue on an old 93 V8 D1 about 10 years ago - it was intermittent however.
I was advised to have the MAF checked. Apparently at start-up the ECM (analog not digital in early models) performed a health check of the system then adjusted idle accordingly.
I never got to find out what the actual problem was as I replaced it with a TDi..
Good luck

did it cause any issues?

Hi all so I finally got an appointment with a recommended mechanic and can I first say what a relief it is to be able to trust what the mechanic is telling you is actually expert advice. :clap2:
Of course it didn't play up when I took it in but he actually listened to what I told him was happening and said there was a few things he needed to check so I left it with him.
He found the engine breathers were blocked and to compensate for this someone manually adjusted the idle sped way higher than it needed to be so he reset the base speed to 600rpm. It is MUCH better now.
I know exactly who adjusted the idle speed my Hilux has also be adjusted the same way Toyota asked me how often I raced the Hilux that I had it so high?
:burnrubber:Me race? I usually drive slower then the speed limit
and I do apologize to anyone that has had to be behind me for that.
I'm extremely impressed by how quick he worked out the problem and his charges were reasonable. If only everyone could be like this I wouldn't have to spend most days smacking my head into a wall but alas my problems are far from over I still have the crap mechanics to contend with as they do "warranty services etc".
