Hi all,
After deliberating for months as to the best set up, I ended up with the roof top tent. Yes there are some negatives with this (like its a bit heavy!), as with any other set up, but all went well. I like the idea of being off the ground. After a few goes I got the setup & packdown in a little over 10 mins. Anyway, the wife stayed home for the week while the boys (6&4) & I set off for out 2300k round trip in a week. 1st stop Carrathool (look it up on Google maps!!) for 2 nights where the old man lives by the Murrumbidgee River, 1 night in Ivanhoe (stop over), 2 nights in Broken Hill ( in a cabin....tooooooooo hot:eek:) & 2 nights in Mildura. Amazingly no problems at all with the Disco with 30-46 deg heat with a/c on!!

It was along a 60k stretch of dirt rd between Hilston & Ivanhoe. Nothing & no one for miles then this came up, must have happend in the last day or that morning as there was no smoke but there was SES & a fire truck still there pulling the other trailer off the trailer you can see.

Its an ARB Touring tent. Got it as a demo cheap from a friend who works there. Was dusty & dirty but never slept in so was really happy!!

The last photo is Mundi Mundi plains just out of Silverton, apparently where Mad Max was filmed hence the car at the pub!! Bit of a tourist attraction. Amazing place the whole area & history of mining back to the mid to late 1800's.

How well do you think your tent would work if mounted on a box trailer??

I am looking to get a roof top tent as well for use when using using the car - but would also be nice to be able to mount on a box trailer in some circumstances - a poor man's camper. Just opens up options.

Thanks

Garry

I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work well. The only thing you may have to do is make some brackets or something to hold the fold out part up as the ladder holds it up when on a roof. The ladder is in 2 pieces, I think if you were putting it on a car then you wouldnt need the extenstion. So if you were mounting on a box trailer then you would probably keep the ladder out of the way & just use a pole or 2 to hold it up. (I hope this makes sense!!)

Thanks - sounds like an option.

Glad you had a good trip. I bought the same tent (ARB) last year and tried it out with my missus and will be taking my boys (4&5) out in the next couple of months. I reckon they are great! cheers JP

I only spent 2 days there, should have spent 4-5 days!!
I wanted to stay in White Cliffs in the underground motel, but ran out of time. I think the kids would have got a kick out of that. I found just searching Google the best thing to do. Welcome to Broken Hill - Broken Hill Accommodation, Book Online, Broken Hill Visitor Centre, Broken Hill New South Wales, Broken Hill Tourism, Accommodation, Tours, Events, Activities, Hire, Car Hire, Businesses, Outback NSW (http://www.visitbrokenhill.com.au/) Welcome to Film Broken Hill (http://www.filmbrokenhill.com/) SILVERTON NSW - Visit the outback. (http://www.silverton.org.au/index.php)
On the way to Silverton, check this mine out, (about 1/2 way b/w Silverton & B.Hill, keep an eye out if you blink you will miss it) my boys loved it, although it was about 45deg out there that day, but nice & cool underground. The Day Dream Mine (http://www.outback.net.au/daydream/mine.html) (the website isnt much!)
Hope this helps.
Dave.

We have a rooftop tent which is very good but found it to be a problem when we set up camp anywhere for a couple of days. You can't go anywhere. So you either stay where you are, carry alternative transport with you or pack up each time you want to go anywhere. So we have now had an off-road box trailer built and put it on there. Haven't tried it yet but I guess like everything else........it won't be perfect :)

Hi Garry
If you follow this link this setup seems to be a favorite in the US for their "expedition" trailers. Ignore that it is a TLC site. A previous interest before I got green blood. :wasntme:

Hi Guys,
We have a roof tent on a custom made aluminium trailer with a aluminium lid. It works great. We didnt want the tent on the roof of the car for the reasons detailed in this thread. I'll post some pics.
