Try it while the car is rolling slowly. This helps the transfer case to release and engauge properly.

Yep, needs to be in neutral and rolling. They loosen up with use though, but I still do it this way as its easier and it wont pop out of gear.

The Rangie sounds like it was a different gearbox. Side to side is usually just the CDL rather than Hi/Lo range.

helps if it's rolling ever so slowly.... drivers' handbook says up to 8km/hr from memory....but IMHE just moving works fine

ie, both for changing up & down (pause for an instant in tc neutral position)

yeah I always find, as my'n was also stiff at one point....

I stop put it in neutral.....move the lever from high to low....roll forward a faction with mhy hand on the lever and if its not in when I did it the first time it goes in with a pop! this way I know its in as I have had it drop out on me before

I'll second Dullbird there .... i like to put mine in low range whilst just creeping as you can definately feel it engage completely. Like Dullbird I have had it slip out once whilst going up hill and it was not nice.

Cheers
